Extreme SVB show Department prevention safe capital rules Stricter capital rules for US banks are a lazy way to keep them safe
SVB) shows, sometimes even supervisors are unaware of the risks a bank is taking, or are unable to stop it when they see it. Moreover, capital regulation will often fail to limit a bank’s pursuit of tail risks that earn profits in good times, because those earnings will add to its capital and allow it to take still more risks—at least until the bad times come. Finally, insofar as more capital gives bank management a longer leash, higher capital requirements may come with an offsetting cost.

BLOCK prevention compliance Trans Mountain pipeline work blocked in B.C. over environmental non-compliance
The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) on Thursday ordered the Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion project to stop work in a wetland area near Abbotsford, British Columbia, after inspectors found several environmental and safety-related non-compliances.The order is the latest hold-up for the Canadian government-owned project, which has been plagued by years of regulatory delay, environmental opposition and massive cost overruns. Some of the non-compliances include insufficient fencing to protect amphibians and unapproved vegetation clearing, the regulator said in a notice on its website. The CER issued an Inspection Officer Order to Trans Mountain ordering it to stop work in the wetland until the non-compliances are corrected, investigate their root cause and conduct a safety inspection to confirm the site is safe for work.Trans Mountain Corp, the Canadian government-owned corporation building the expansion project, said the order applies to a specific work area of about 800 meters.“Trans Mountain is working hard to correct all non-compliances and to prevent reoccurrence,” the company said in a statement, adding it “will seek to have the restrictions under the order lifted as soon as appropriate and according to the law.”Work on the oil pipeline expansion project is more than 95 per cent complete, Trans Mountain said. The 590,000 barrel-per-day expansion will nearly triple capacity on the existing pipeline running from Alberta to Canada’s Pacific Coast. It is due to start operating early next year and will open up markets in Asia and on the U.S.

Waters Extreme CEO Corning country prevention World's top sugar trader is having deja vu of an epic shortage thanks to non-contributory India
Consecutive years of deficits, weather damage in key crops and shipping bottlenecks are reminding the world’s top sugar trading company of 2010 and 2011, when prices of the sweetener hit a three-decade high. “Current conditions are eerily similar,” said Mauro Angelo, chief executive officer at Alvean, a trading house controlled by Brazilian producer Copersucar SA. The company expects a sixth straight year of deficits in the coming season as a poor outlook for India’s crops is set to drive down global stockpiles of sugar. To make matters worse, top producer Brazil is seeing a repeat of last decade’s logjams that’s keeping the world undersupplied. “Rains in India have been horrible and water reservoirs are extremely low, so the next crop could be even worse than the current one,” Angelo said in an interview. India isn’t expected to ship any sugar for the season that just started, a shift from two seasons ago when exports were as much as 11 million tons.
