climate change. This underscores the critical need to alter our course and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the next six years, as reported by Space.com A recent assessment of our remaining carbon budget, which signifies the allowable amount of carbon dioxide emissions to prevent global temperatures from exceeding a critical threshold, reveals that as of January, surpassing 276 gigatons (250 metric gigatons) of CO2 emissions will result in a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels.

China blasts 'malicious' Canada air patrol after latest intercept
South China Sea, after Ottawa rebuked Beijing for what it described as a second risky midair intercept in two weeks. Canada's Defence Minister Bill Blair said Friday that a Chinese fighter jet twice flew close to a Canadian Cyclone helicopter over the Paracel Islands on October 29, firing flares «directly in front» of the craft on the second flyby. The jet's actions «were deemed to be significantly unsafe», Blair said of the incident, which followed a similar near-miss over another disputed waterway near China in mid-October. Beijing hit back at Blair's claims on Saturday, with a defence ministry spokesperson saying the Canadian helicopter conducted «a malicious and provocative act with ulterior motives». «Recently, ship-borne helicopters on Canada's HMCS Ottawa made two sorties towards the airspace around China's Xisha Islands, with unknown intentions,» Zhang Xiaogang said in an online statement, using the Chinese name for the Paracels. «China's People's Liberation Army organised naval and air forces to identify and verify (the craft) in accordance with the law, and issued multiple warnings,» Zhang said. «However, the Canadian helicopter not only refused to respond, but also took provocative actions such as flying at ultra-low altitudes,» he added. «Afterwards, (Canada) wantonly hyped the event and made accusations and smears against China in the media,» Zhang claimed. «Canada's actions violated China's domestic laws and international law, endangered China's sovereignty and security,» he said. «We urge the Canadian side… to strictly curb the actions of frontline sea and air forces to prevent accidents at sea and in the air.» The HMCS Ottawa was transiting the South China Sea as part of attempts by the United

Is salt really a new culprit in type 2 diabetes?
type 2 diabetes, they often think of sugar (even though the evidence for that is still not clear). Now, a new study from the US points the finger at salt. The study, conducted by researchers at Tulane University in New Orleans, used data on about 400,000 adults, taken from the UK Biobank study. This observational study followed the participants for nearly twelve years. In that time, around 13,000 developed type 2 diabetes. In a press release, the principal investigator on the study said that «taking the saltshaker off the table can help prevent type 2 diabetes». But is it really as simple as that? For a start, this type of study, called an observational study, cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that one thing is related to another. (There could be other factors at play.) So it is not appropriate to say removing the saltshaker «can help prevent». My colleague Dan Green and I have previously criticised university press releases such as this as they can lead to misleading news stories. The Tulane study can only suggest an association between salt use and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes — nothing more. This is before considering the quality of the data itself. The data used to assess salt use, was based on the simple question: «Do you add salt to your food?» (It specifically excluded salt added in cooking.) The question the participants in the study answered only had the options: «never/rarely», «sometimes», «usually» or «always». This means it is not possible to estimate from the answers how much salt might be associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

He noted that the Pakistan team have been on the road for a long time, but they have been able to go out and eat at various places, which they have not been able to do this time. Arthur said, "What has been tough is the fact that we've been under a massive amount of security.

Finance ministry releases Rs 10,000 crore in urgent aid for NREGS
finance ministry has released ₹10,000 crore in urgent assistance to meet unexpected enhanced expenditure under the rural job guarantee scheme until the first batch of supplementary demands for grants is approved by parliament at its next session, a senior official said. The unusual move came after 95% of the FY24 budgetary outlay of ₹60,000 crore for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) was exhausted well before the commencement of the winter session of parliament, thanks to a rise in work demand, the official told ET. The urgent funds, released last week to the rural development ministry, will form a part of the additional ₹28,000 crore that could be allocated for the scheme in the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for FY24, he said. The government is yet to announce the dates for the winter session of parliament. At a pre-budget meeting in October, the rural development ministry had asked the finance ministry for additional funds for the rural employment scheme due to enhanced work demand. More people sought work under the MGNREGS until October this fiscal year from a year before, contradicting initial official projections of a moderation in demand. This is mainly due to an erratic monsoon that prevented the usual migration of workers to farming and a tentative industrial recovery, experts have said.

Unabated Karnataka bewilders Congress
Congress circles in Delhi are watching with growing unease and bewilderment the almost daily bickering among senior ministers in the Karnataka government over the leadership issue, less than six months after the Siddaramaiah government assumed office. Congress galleries are abuzz as the inhouse debate on how long Siddaramaiah would last and demand for 3-4 deputy chief ministers have continued despite AICC's September order to senior ministers not to squabble in public. IT and tourism minister Priyank Kharge, better known as the son of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, added spice to the party feud on Friday. Just a day after Siddaramaiah asserted that he would remain CM for five years, Kharge junior not only tried to dismiss it as the CM's personal view but expressed readiness to be the CM if the high command so wished.
