The green panel was hearing a plea alleging that Assam's forest department had illegally diverted 28 hectares of reserve forest for the establishment of the 2nd Assam Commando Battalion in the Assam-Nagaland interstate border area of Geleky Reserve Forest in Sibsagar district. It also alleged that unauthorised permission was granted by the then Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) M K Yadava, who «misused his power and position to divert a large part of the forest area» without taking consent from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). In an order passed on August 9, the eastern bench of the NGT comprising judicial member Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and expert member Arun Kumar Verma noted that an affidavit was filed by the present PCCF, stating the construction of the forest battalion was an «activity for forest conservation and management» and while undertaking it, no trees were felled.

The panel, constituted by the home ministry on Friday, was mandated to maintain communication channels with its Bangladesh counterpart to ensure safety and security of Indian nationals and minorities living there. According to BSF, the first meeting was held on Saturday. «In order to reach out to counterparts up to border outpost and company levels, both the border guarding forces have held around 83 flag meetings at various levels in the last three days,» BSF said. While appreciating BGB's role in preventing Bangladeshis from coming close to borders, BSF impressed upon BGB to protect Indians and minorities in Bangladesh.

The fraud involved fraudulent GST refunds that amounted to approximately Rs 54 crore, and forged invoices totaling Rs 718 crore were discovered. The operation uncovered nearly 500 non-existent firms, which appeared to be engaging in business activities solely on paper to claim the fraudulent refunds, a TOI report stated. Officials have pointed to significant procedural lapses and malpractices by the arrested GST officer, Babita Sharma, who has since been suspended. The fraudulent refunds were reportedly approved without proper verification of input tax credit, which has resulted in a substantial loss to the government’s exchequer.
