Who moved my paneer? India’s food regulator has a plan to weed out impostors
₹65,000-crore domestic paneer market, according to two government officials and a document reviewed by Mint.Authorities have frequently seized fake paneer ahead of major festivals, when demand surges, giving unscrupulous traders an opportunity to flood markets with adulterated products, posing a threat to consumer health. To curb this unsavoury practice, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) proposes to make it compulsory for paneer substitutes (products made from non-dairy ingredients such as vegetable oils) as “paneer analogue”, while prohibiting the use of any dairy-related terminology, to help consumers clearly distinguish them from milk-based paneer.“Currently, analogues are designed to mimic the white, creamy appearance of traditional or real paneer, often using starches and emulsifiers to replicate the texture. The proposed regulations aim to empower consumers to make informed choices instantly and promote healthy eating,” said the first of the two government officials cited earlier, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity. For clear visual identification, these substitutes will have food colour added to them to ensure that they stand out from the white and natural dairy paneer or paneer-based products.

Next year’s shift to risk-based deposit insurance could help depositors make better banking choices
It is heartening that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to adopt a risk-based framework for deposit insurance to replace a one-size-fits-all one which does not distinguish between banks on the basis of their individual risk profiles. This decision was taken on Friday and it follows RBI’s monetary policy statement of October 2025, in which the central bank had proposed a model that abandons a flat premium rate in favour of payments that vary by risk—in this case, of a regular bank failing to meet its obligations to depositors. With this shift slated to come into effect from 2026-27, financially sound banks can expect to save on the price they pay.

OpenAI set to launch a new open-source language model in coming months
image generator, OpenAI has revealed plans to launch a new open language model—its first since GPT-2. To shape its development, the company is seeking input from developers, researchers, and the wider AI community through a feedback form. Open-source language models (OS LLMs) are designed to understand, generate, and manipulate human language, leveraging large datasets and sophisticated algorithms to perform a variety of language-based tasks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the news, stating, “We are planning to release our first open-weight language model since GPT-2. We've been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence. Now it feels important to do.” Altman added that before the model is released, OpenAI plans to evaluate it using its preparedness framework, the same process applied to all its models. “And we will do extra work given that we know this model will be modified post-release,” he stated in the post.

Why it’s crucial to rebalance MF portfolios
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY REBALANCING MUTUAL FUND PORTFOLIOS? Various asset classes move in different directions over a period of time. Due to this, asset allocation of an individual changes over a time. For example, due to a sharp rally in the price of gold by 35% in the last one year, investor allocation to gold would have increased. However, with the Nifty 50 moving up just 6-7% it could have lowered the overall allocation to equity in the portfolio. So you need to rebalance it to bring it back in line with the original. So an investor starting with 65% equity, 25% debt and 10% gold, needs to bring back this allocation at the end of the year, which is called rebalancing.

MSMEs in India and the insurance imperative: Closing the protection gap.
India’s economy, MSMEs remain critically underinsured. With less than 15% having adequate insurance coverage, millions of businesses are left vulnerable to financial shocks. Why, then, do so many small enterprises overlook such a crucial safety net? Business insurance penetration among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India remains alarmingly low. Given that there are 63 million MSMEs, which currently contribute approximately 30% to India’s gross domestic product (GDP), only a small fraction have insurance. Insurance coverage is crucial for MSMEs, given their limited capacity to withstand risks such as payment defaults. In the post-pandemic world, challenges such as supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, inflation, and economic slowdowns have further heightened the risks associated with exports, making risk mitigation through insurance more vital than ever. This raises an important question: Are MSMEs reluctant to embrace insurance, or is the system failing to make insurance accessible and compelling? According to Girija Subramanian, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, The New India Assurance Co. Ltd., the issue is deeply rooted in perception and awareness. Speaking on the sidelines of the Economic Times (ET) MSME Awards 2024 in Delhi, Subramanian addressed this challenge in a fireside chat moderated by Neha Dewan, Assistant News Editor, The Economic Times.
