markets COST UPS Provident Experts show Tax harvesting to rescue equity investors: How loss from equities could help you save more tax
income tax only when you sell your holdings. While you need to pay taxes on your gains, you also get an opportunity to save taxes in case you incur losses. Short-term capital loss on selling equities can be adjusted against any short-term or long-term capital gains on selling equities. When it comes to long-term capital loss it can be adjusted only against long-term capital gain on equities. You are also allowed to carry over the losses for future years. This method, which is called tax harvesting method allows individual taxpayers to not pay capital gains tax on their equity shares and mutual funds. However, this method can only be effectively used only if you have long term capital gains (LTCG) on equities up to Rs 1.25 lakh or have any significant loss from equities. The reason for this is because LTCG up to Rs 1.25 lakh is non-taxable though you need to declare this income in the ITR. However, if you have any significant loss, then you can set off it against any capital gains in future and can even carry it forward for up to eight years. The best part is that the new tax regime does not specifically alter the rules for claiming capital gains losses. Moreover, the new tax regime maintains the same rules as the old tax regime for carrying forward losses.

markets Provident Aviat RAI reports prevention Reliance Jio, Airtel seek ‘fair competition’ as govt weighs Starlink’s satcom licence
Reliance Jio and Airtel have urged the government to ensure a level playing field in the satellite communications sector as it prepares to decide on a licence and spectrum allocation for Elon Musk’s Starlink, ToI reported. The companies have called for “comparable” spectrum pricing for satellite operators to prevent what they term as “market distortions.” In a petition to the government, the telecom firms have accused the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) of not addressing the competitive imbalance between satellite and terrestrial spectrum allocation. “Comparable spectrum pricing to terrestrial services should be enforced for competing satellite services in urban/semi-urban/rural areas for retail/enterprise customers,” the representation said. It argues that satellite operators providing similar services must comply with the same pricing, regulatory levies, and fees as terrestrial telecom providers. The new telecom law passed in December 2023 allows satellite spectrum to be assigned administratively for a fee, unlike terrestrial spectrum, which is auctioned. However, the specifics of pricing and allocation are still being worked out by Trai.

markets Provident Man Action Justice Courts Investigations Homebuyers taken to ransom: SC wants probe into builder-bank mess
Supreme Court has called for an investigation into the alleged nexus between real estate developers and banks, which it said had left poor homebuyers in the National Capital Region (NCR) “at ransom.” The court has sought a response from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the possibility of conducting the probe. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh raised concerns over builders, banks, and interim resolution professionals failing to provide details about delayed housing projects and their construction progress. The court said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) must be formed to examine the issue, stating, “People invested their hard-earned money, but poor homebuyers have been taken to ransom.” The case involves thousands of homebuyers who purchased flats under subvention schemes, where banks directly disburse loans to builders, who are then responsible for paying the EMIs until the homes are handed over. However, several builders defaulted on payments, leading banks to demand EMIs from buyers, despite the delayed possession of their flats.

markets Provident security Death rights Relationships Are men defenceless against domestic violence laws? What SC says about men's rights in these cases
domestic violence and women can be the perpetrators. There are no existing laws that protect men under the purview of domestic violence. Recognising that a person is being abused is extremely difficult, as a lot of domestic abuse takes place behind closed doors. The four main reasons for the underreporting of domestic violence cases against Indian men are general stereotypes against males, fear of fake cases, societal and family pressure, and denial. The social, cultural, and emotional barriers in society prevent us from recognising the victimisation of men by women.
