Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai emphasised the urgent need to tackle air pollution across northern India, calling the next 15 days «crucial». Following a key meeting with the Central government on Friday, Rai held a press conference on Saturday. The meeting, attended by Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Bhupender Yadav, along with environment ministers from neighbouring states, aimed to assess and address the worsening air quality in the region. Rai expressed concern over the delay in this year's meeting and said, «Last year, a similar meeting was held in August, allowing us more time to strategise. »This year's meeting took place in the last week of October. Had it been conducted three months earlier, we could have tackled the pollution problem more effectively," Rai said.

Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital recorded a reading of 237 early Saturday, down from 283 the previous day. Despite this minor drop, areas such as ITI Jahangirpuri continue to experience high pollution levels, with AQI readings reaching 265. Authorities warn that pollution levels may worsen as the festival approaches, potentially reaching hazardous levels within the next few days. A layer of smog engulfed certain parts of the national capital. The AQI recorded on Friday was 283 AQI today in ITI Jahangirpuri read 265 while AQI around India gate area was recorded at 237 which fell in the 'poor' category. The AQI at India Gate improved slightly, being recorded at 276 on Friday.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Friday released its fifth list for the assembly polls, announcing former BJP legislator Lois Marandi as its nominee from the Jama seat. The list contained only the name of Marandi who had defeated Chief Minister Hemant Soren in 2014 from Dumka. She defected from the BJP after not getting ticket and joined the JMM on October 21 along with two other former legislators — Kunal Sarangi and Lakshman Tudu. Lois Marandi, a former minister, said it was «painful» to part ways with BJP after serving it for 24 years. «The BJP in 2014 scripted a historic win in Dumka, which was considered a JMM bastion. But it honoured the women who are brought to the party from outside and not those who dedicated their entire life for them,» she had said.

Mobile internet services will remain suspended across Assam from 8.30 am to 4 pm on Sunday for the conduct of a government recruitment exam, an official notification said on Friday. This would be the third such instance in two months. «Mobile internet, mobile WiFi and mobile data services of all service providers will remain suspended from 8.30 am to 4 pm in the interest of holding free, fair and transparent written examination and also to prevent arising of any law and order issues having a bearing on public safety,» the order said. Mobile internet services were earlier suspended on two days in September during the conduct of similar exams by the state-level recruitment commission.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Friday announced that the Delhi government will monitor hotspots across Delhi through drones, adding that his government is working day and night to control the pollution. Speaking to mediapersons, Rai said, «As we had announced a winter action plan to control winter pollution, in that winter action plan, different measures are being taken to control pollution, to control vehicle pollution, to control biomass burning. The Aam Aadmi Party government is working day and night. But as you all know in our 13 hotspots, the level of pollution is higher than the normal AQI level in Delhi. Therefore, this time we decided that we would monitor hotspots through drones and under that, today Wazirpur is one of our 13 hot spots. Here today the drone has been piloted by the panel agency.»

CBI court has convicted a retired superintendent of the Goods and Services Tax Department and his wife for accumulating unaccounted assets worth Rs 1.24 crore, which were disproportionate to the officer’s known sources of income. The case spans the period from 1994 to 2018. Prasiddh Dubey, 66, received a sentence of four years in prison, while his wife, Vimla Dubey, was sentenced to two years for her role in aiding and abetting him.

Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain said that the devotees, including those undertaking a month-long 'Kartik Brata' ritual, should also be discouraged from visiting the temple as a safety measure. Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in a statement said that all measures were being taken to protect the shrine located in the seaside town while keeping the daily rituals intact. The administration said that measures have been taken to ensure that loose materials like GI sheets, scaffolding tubes and others do not get affected in the gale.

Bombay High Court on Wednesday suspended the life sentence of gangster Chhota Rajan in connection with the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty here in 2001 and granted him bail in the case. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan directed Rajan to furnish a bond of Rs one lakh for the bail. Rajan will, however, continue to remain in jail in connection with other criminal cases. In May this year, a special court convicted Rajan in the hotelier's murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

NMDC has announced another price hike for its iron ore effective from October 23, a notification said. The price of lump ore has increased by 18.69 per cent since August this year and by 10.43 per cent in October alone to Rs 6,350 per tonne. While fines have seen a 17.35 per cent hike since August and a nearly 8 per cent rise in October to Rs 5,410 per tonne.
