Maharashtra may be a nightmare for political pandits, but the state has not witnessed single-party rule for the last nearly thirty years. Since 1995, only alliances have ruled in the state, though the last five years witnessed extraordinary realignments where former allies became sworn enemies and sworn enemies became friends. The state had its last one-party government in 1990 when the Congress retained power by winning 141 seats in the 288-member assembly though it fell short of a simple majority. The BJP won 42 and Shiv Sena 52 seats. The present coalition-era started in 1995 when the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance ended the Grand Old Party's hegemony and formed a government.

India's trade deficit widened to $20.78 billion on an annual basis in September from $20.08 billion in the same month last year, data from the Commerce Ministry showed on Wednesday. As per a Reuters poll, the economists had expected the country's September data to be $25 billion. India's merchandise trade deficit widened to a ten-month high of $29.65 billion in August.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday reaffirmed his party's commitment to restoring statehood in Jammu and Kashmir, following Omar Abdullah's swearing-in as the region's chief minister. Speaking to ANI, Kharge said, «I have come here to congratulate him. Let's get one thing straight at the beginning: The pension you earn from NPS after retirement will depend on how much corpus you can accumulate. Before you start investing, you need to know the withdrawal rules of NPS. At present, an NPS subscriber cannot withdraw the entire accumulated corpus on maturity. You have to invest at least 40% of the total NPS corpus in an annuity plan from a life insurance company. The annuity amount will get a regular pension after retirement. The remaining 60% can be withdrawn as a lump sum.

North Tripura District for three days after communal tensions flared up at Pekucherra on Tuesday after a Shiva temple and a mosque were vandalised. A police official said that a large contingent of security forces including Tripura State Rifles were deployed after the unrest started late on Monday night when “unknown miscreants’ damaged a Shiva temple at Pekucherra. He said in retaliation, a group of people vandalised a mosque causing serious tension in the entire mixed populated areas.

Delhi water supply cut: Residents in parts of Delhi’s Outer North district will face an 18-hour water supply disruption starting from 10 am on Wednesday, due to maintenance work, as announced by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), according to a PTI report.

Google said on Monday it signed the world's first corporate agreement to buy power from multiple small modular reactors to meet electricity demand for artificial intelligence. The technology company's agreement with Kairos Power aims to bring Kairos' first small modular reactor online by 2030, followed by additional deployments through 2035. The companies did not reveal financial details of the agreement or where in the U.S. the plants would be built. Google said it has agreed to buy a total of 500 megawatts of power from six to seven reactors, which is smaller than the output of today's nuclear reactors.

Delhi Pollution Control Committee on Monday ordered complete ban on manufacturing, storage, selling and bursting of all kinds of firecrackers upto January 1, 2025 in the national capital. The ban comes ahead of festive season that can result a surge in pollition in the union territory. Delhi's air quality worsened to the 'poor' category on Sunday, the day after Dussehra, with the Centre deciding to closely monitor the situation before taking anti-air pollution measures under Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 224 on Sunday, according to the 4 pm AQI bulletin from the Central Pollution Control Board. GRAP is categorised into four stages based on Delhi's air quality: Stage I — 'Poor' (AQI 201-300); Stage II — 'Very Poor' (AQI 301-400); Stage III — 'Severe' (AQI 401-450); and Stage IV — 'Severe Plus' (AQI >450).

HDFC Bank continued its drive to aggressively grow its deposit base by adding more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore worth of deposits in the September quarter provisional numbers showed. The lender grew its deposit by 15.1% at the end of the September quarter taking its total deposit base to Rs 25 lakh crore. Sequentially deposits grew by 5%. «Overall, we see this as a good set of numbers and if the margin is stable despite the slower loan growth, it would provide greater confidence on a quicker normalization story,» said Pranav Gundlapalle, head, India financials at Bernstein. «We could even see a continuation of the healthy margin improvement story if there had been a substantial decline in borrowings during the quarter.»

The incident took place around 1 am on G T Road, between Kachhawan and Mirzamurad on the Mirzapur-Varanasi border, Superintendent of Police (Mirzapur) Abhinandan said. «The tractor trolley, carrying 13 labourers who were returning from construction work in Bhadohi district, was hit from behind by the truck that had gone out of the driver's control,» the SP said. On being alerted, the SP and other senior officers rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue operations.

Hurricane Kirk strengthened on Thursday into a Category 4 storm in the Atlantic Ocean and waves caused by it could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions this weekend, forecasters said. Swells generated by Kirk were expected to reach portions of the Leeward Islands on Friday, Bermuda and the Greater Antilles on Saturday, and the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas on Sunday, the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Kirk was expected to remain away from land, the center said, and there were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

United Kingdom has agreed to sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos archipelago, which includes the largest US military base in the Indian Ocean at Diego Garcia and has remained a colonial legacy in the region. In a joint statement, the UK and Mauritius said that the 'historic political agreement' has been reached with the full support and assistance of the United States of America and India. The two nations reached an agreement after two years of negotiations, following increasing concern about the Chagos archipelago being used as a route for illegal migration. The agreement will not mark any change to the significant US military presence at Diego Garcia as it includes a 99 year clause that ensures continuation of the base.
