Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh said on Friday, adding that in terms of production capacity, India is «way behind».
The officer, who took charge earlier this month, said the Air Force needs new multi-role fighter jets «as of yesterday» but a decision on the process to acquire them has been pending.
In frank comments on how the Air Force fares in comparison to China, the Air chief said that when it comes to the human element, the people behind the machine, India is way ahead but lags on technology and production.
«As far as technology is concerned, we may not be so good as of now. We have lagged. We were better than them in technology also, some time back. But we have lagged on that, and we need to catch up. As far as production rates are concerned, we are way behind. We need to catch up with them,» the Air chief said.
He also made it clear that the Air Force urgently requires new multi-role fighter jets beyond the planned induction of indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA). The officer said that multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA) are «needed as of yesterday» and that the Air Force has been «waiting for the decision to be taken as to what route we will follow».
