After Europe’s carbon tax, Germany props up fresh hurdles for Indian companies
NEW DELHI : Indian companies directly or indirectly in business with European firms face a twin hurdle as Germany tightens its screws on a new law aimed at ensuring fair labour standards and environmental requirements. For Indian businesses already subject to Europe’s carbon tax, Germany’s supply chain rules would mean additional compliance and reporting costs, apart from fines and loss of business opportunities for any violations, industry experts told Mint.

What's the buzz about Amethi, the erstwhile Gandhi pocket borough?
Amethi is back in news and buzzing with excitement. Even as the BJP leaders taunt Rahul Gandhi for leaving Amethi constituency for Wayanad in Kerala, videos of massive cleaning and renovation work at his house in the town were shared on social media. This has led to hope among the Uttar Pradesh Congress cadre who were demoralised after signs that Rahul may not fight from Amethi this time. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul contested from Amethi and Wayanad. He lost to BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi, but won from Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi from 2004 till 2019. The seat is also associated with Rahul’s father Rajiv Gandhi, who represented the seat between 1981 till his death in 1991. Sonia Gandhi contested elections from here in 1999 and passed it on to Rahul in 2004. The workers engaged at Rahul's bungalow at Amethi were not just cleaning but also seen clearing the garden area, TOI has reported. Tent poles and material for a canopy were also seen lying near the house. The workers said that they were hired by the party. “I am told that Rahul Bhaiya will come soon. Therefore, all the cleaning and renovation work is being done,” said one of them. Asked to comment on renovation work underway at Rahul’s home in Amethi’s Gauriganj area, ex-MLC Deepak Singh said, “This is routine. Whether or not he contests elections from here, he is sure to visit Amethi during the campaign time.”

Fractional ownership platforms start registering under new SEBI regulations
Fractional ownership platforms have started the process of registering under SM REIT regulations, a month after Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) notified these rules to govern small and medium real estate investment trusts (SM REITs) of income-generating and completed properties including commercial assets, rental housing, warehousing, and hotels. Integrated co-working firm EFC (I) Ltd plans to form an investment manager entity to manage assets and investments of SM REIT through a wholly owned subsidiary EFC Ltd. Others like Strata and WiseX are also taking similar steps. “With Sebi notifying amended regulations for SM REITs, investors can now have ownership of rent-yielding real estate assets by making a minimum investment of Rs 10 lakh. The move will help enhance transparency and boost participation of both domestic and foreign retail investors thereby leading to better liquidity in the market,” said Umesh Sahay, founder & CEO, EFC (I) Ltd.

US to take aim at Chinese banks aiding Russia war effort: Report
Chinese banks off the global financial system, in the hopes of stopping Beijing's commercial support of Russia's military production, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. With Secretary of State Antony Blinken due to visit China this week, it remains to be seen whether this financial threat will dent the China-Russia trade enabling Moscow to rebuild its military after losses in Ukraine, the report said. Blinken on Friday criticized Chinese support for Russia's defence industry, saying Beijing was the key contributor to Moscow's war in Ukraine through its provision of critical components for weaponry.
