NGT flags solid, sewage waste management issues in Gujarat, Odisha
National Green Tribunal while monitoring the status of waste management across the country's states and Union Territories flagged several issues last month after analysing the progress reports submitted by Gujarat and Odisha. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that the two states filed separate progress reports detailing the steps taken to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court's directions regarding solid waste management rules and establishing adequate sewage treatment plants (STPs). Last year, the tribunal imposed environmental compensation (EC) on various states for the gaps in waste management, including Rs 2,100 crore on Gujarat, which had to be kept in a ring-fenced account. It stopped short of imposing the fine on Odisha after the state government gave an undertaking that it would set aside Rs 1,138 crore to address the gaps. Regarding solid waste management in Gujarat, the bench also comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Kumar Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel said, «The gap reported in waste processing is almost at the same level as was reported earlier, which is on account of not having waste processing facilities commensurate with waste generation.»

US says Iranian-American held in Iran as tensions high following Israeli attack on country
Iranian-American journalist who once worked for a U.S. government-funded broadcaster is believed to have been detained by Iran for months now, authorities said Sunday, further raising the stakes as Tehran threatens to retaliate over an Israeli attack on the country. The imprisonment of Reza Valizadeh, acknowledged to The Associated Press by the U.S. State Department, came as Iran marked the 45th anniversary of the American Embassy takeover and hostage crisis on Sunday. It also followed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatening both Israel and the U.S. the day before with «a crushing response» as long-range B-52 bombers reached the Middle East in an attempt to deter Tehran. Valizadeh had worked for Radio Farda, an outlet under Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that's overseen by the U.S. Agency for Global Media. In February, he wrote on the social platform X that his family members had been detained in an effort to see him return to Iran.

You won't believe how much King Charles and Prince William's estate profits from cash-strapped charities and public services
Channel 4’s Dispatches and the Sunday Times has revealed that King Charles and Prince William’s private estates are receiving significant funds from cash-strapped charities and public services. The estates, known as the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, reportedly earn millions from leasing land and buildings. The investigation found that the royals’ estates have amassed at least £50 million from leasing land to public services including the NHS, state schools, and prisons. One notable contract involves the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS hospital trust in London, which will pay £11.4 million over 15 years to use a warehouse owned by the Duchy of Lancaster for its electric ambulance fleet. King Charles is also expected to generate an estimated £28 million from windfarms, as the Duchy of Lancaster charges fees for cables crossing the foreshore. In addition, Prince William’s Duchy of Cornwall has agreed to lease Dartmoor prison to the Ministry of Justice for £37 million over 25 years. Despite this, the Ministry must handle all repairs for the currently unoccupied facility.

Lower sales realisation hit margins of cement makers in Q2
sales realisation. Barring three leading cement producers — UltraTech Cement, Ambuja Cement, and Dalmia Bharat — other smaller players, including Nuvoco Vistas Corp, JK Cement, Birla Corporation, and Heidelberg Cement, reported a decline in topline and sales volume in the second quarter of the current fiscal year. Industry observers said the increase in sales volume of UltraTech and Ambuja Cements is mainly due to the several acquisitions by both companies that consolidated their position further in the industry. The industry also faced challenges such as extended monsoon, floods, and a slow pickup in government demand, cumulatively leading towards a weak demand.

Trump to rally backers every day until election in North Carolina, swing state he won twice
Even as Trump looks to expand the electoral map and project strength with trips to New Mexico and Virginia, two Democratic states not widely viewed as competitive, he is putting considerable time into North Carolina, which last backed a Democrat for president in 2008. The former president's path to the 270 electoral votes needed to capture the presidency gets significantly more complicated if he loses North Carolina. The fast-growing Southern state gave Trump his smallest margin of victory — 1.3 percentage points — over Democrat Joe Biden four years ago.
