ITR refund or TDS credit claimed through common email or mobile comes under scrutiny; High risk tax refund cases to be investigated
tax authorities have chosen to examine high-risk refund cases for the financial year 2023-24 (Assessment Year 2024-25) using statistical analysis of specific cases. Tax officers were notified of this decision through an internal directive dated October 3, 2024, which is not publicly available. This means that even if you have already received a tax refund for the financial year 2023-24, your case could still be selected for investigation if the tax department suspects any irregularities. “Suspicious clusters, comprising of ITRs in which common email ID has been reported, has been identified based on certain rules. Details of such high-risk clusters are being disseminated to the respective CRU (Central Registry Unit) Nodal officer 1 for the purpose of verification of suspicion that false claims of refunds have been made in an organised manner or through a single key person,” said the Income Tax Department on the said internal order.

Broadband companies and tech giants challenge Bharat 6G's 6GHz band recommendations
6G services by Bharat 6G Alliance proposing that the 6GHz band be used by telcos has drawn protests from technology companies and broadband service providers. The report, yet to be released in public, has identified the 6GHz band because of its large contiguous bandwidth. «It supports enhanced coverage and capacity of urban and suburban environments, and its ability to balance mobility and data requirements make it a promising 6G candidate,» the report said. ET has seen a copy of the report. «The 6 GHz to 8.4 GHz spectrum is foreseen as „Golden Band“ of opportunity for 6G success in India. The entire frequency range should be studied for use by mobile operators,» the report notes.

Festive shopping via ecommerce may be changing both consumer and societal behaviour
ecommerce companies are slated to ship merchandise worth $12 bn in the latest festive season, a rise of 23% vs last year. Quick commerce, the Shinkansen sibling, may well contribute to nearly 10% of this figure. Piyush Goyal has publicly expressed concern about online discounting policies ravaging small retailers. All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) has complained to large manufacturers about rampant transactional favouritism to the digital universe. Flipkart's 2024 'Big Billion Day' attracted over 33 cr user visits over just two days, while Meesho's 'Mega Blockbuster Sale' recorded a 100% growth in Day 1 sales. Both brands have noted a clear increase in the demand from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, spurred by improving logistics. Physical channels are still going strong. But, clearly, the shift towards device-to-home is irreversible, aided by a seminal shift in consumer behaviour across categories, from dining to dressing. Quickcom, reportedly growing at over 280% over the last 24 months, has led to an influx of new categories, including consumer electronics.

Apple to launch cheaper Vision Headset next year, suggests Mark Gurman: Here's how much it could cost
Apple Vision Pro, which debuted earlier this year at $3,499.Reportedly, Apple’s decision to fast-track the development of a cheaper headset stems from the Vision Pro’s high price, which has limited its appeal and accessibility to a wider audience. Reports from earlier this year suggested that Apple had paused Vision Pro development to focus on this lower-cost variant, which remains the company’s priority. As per the publication, the more affordable headset will likely feature downgraded components, including a less powerful processor and cheaper materials.

Angelina Jolie is delighted as Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s latest movie Wolfs gets yanked from cinemas
George Clooney film Wolfs was pulled from theaters and plopped straight on to Apple TV+ streaming, which reportedly pleased the one woman he may not love — Angelina Jolie. Sources tell us that Jolie is thrilled with the short theatrical run and switch to streaming for the film, particularly now that she's riding on a successful press tour with her own movie, Maria, which was bankrolled by Netflix, as per a report. This sudden withdrawal of Wolfs by Apple TV+ just weeks after a limited release from the cinema has left Pitt, Clooney, and their teams scratching their heads in anger. A source has claimed that this decision has come as the biggest blow for both the actors, who earlier had managed to bargain for a theatrical release. Change of this kind has shocked several people, including the director Jon Watts, who expressed his feelings by arguing that the movie was made to be seen at the theaters, InTouch reported.
