Air in your car cabin could lead to cancer, neurological, and reproductive issues: Here’s what study says
National Green Tribunal (NGT) by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has revealed that some flame-retardant chemicals found in car cabin air, which may be carcinogenic, are not listed under the Manufacture, Storage, and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules 1989. This report highlights a potential regulatory gap, as these rules were issued by the Union Ministry of Environment. The CPCB’s report, dated September 10, 2024, noted that no testing had been conducted on these chemicals and recommended that the tribunal consult agencies overseeing automobile safety standards, which are regulated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This issue gained attention in June when the NGT’s principal bench, led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava, took suo motu notice of a media report indicating the presence of «carcinogenic flame retardants» in cars. The claim, which is being investigated by the US National Toxicology Program, prompted the NGT to request a report from CPCB on the matter.

Why are petrol prices not decreasing, asks TMC's Derek O'Brien
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Monday questioned why petrol prices in India are not decreasing despite a decline in global crude oil prices. In a post on X, the Rajya Sabha MP said the crude oil prices have come down by around 24 per cent in last ten years, but petrol price in India has gone up by 30 per cent. In August 2014, crude oil was priced USD 102 per barrel and petrol price was Rs 73, while in August 2024, crude oil is at USD 78 per barrel, and yet petrol price is Rs 95, he said. «Why are petrol prices in India not decreasing despite a decline in global crude oil prices?» wrote O'Brien, TMC's parliamentary party leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Out of Rs 1.5 lk crore, govt approves Rs 46k crore as capex loans to states
capex loans to states so far out of the total ₹1.5 lakh crore allocated for FY25. «So far, ₹46,000 crore has been approved for sanction under the capex loan to states, out of which ₹25,000 crore has been released,» a senior government official told ET. Of the ₹95,000 crore conditional loan, ₹25,000 crore is linked to the capex performance of states. States will get half of the corresponding share only after reporting capex growth of 10% or more in FY24, and the remaining 50% after achieving a 10% growth in capex this fiscal. «This will provide an incentive for states to increase their capex,» the official said.

Bank of Baroda. Though the ICR was comfortable despite moderation, the higher base effect is likely to keep profit growth under pressure. This is distressing as profits are the main driver of the debt servicing ratio. ICR measures a company’s debt servicing capability and indicates whether the company is making enough profits to meet its interest liabilities. Moreover, the sectors that contributed significantly to top line or revenue growth in 2023-24 saw a slowdown in the June quarter. These sectors included automobiles, consumer services, airlines, industrials and cement. “The demand slowdown is a sign of worry,” states the Nuvama report.

Production of 'new will' gives fresh twist to Kalyani family feud
Gaurishankar Kalyani, brother of Baba Kalyani, has filed an affidavit in the Pune Civil Court challenging the execution of his late mother Sulochana Kalyani's 2012 will. Gaurishankar produced a new will dated December 9, 2022, containing several serious accusations against Baba Kalyani. In the affidavit, the late Sulochana reportedly wrote Baba had taken control of most of the family's wealth, leaving her and her husband, Neelkanth Kalyani, with a small portion. «Between 1992 and 1994, Baba seized control of several companies, including Bharat Forge and Kalyani Steels, from my husband. After 1994, we were left with only a small share of the wealth my husband had built,» affidavit states. Gaurishankar's affidavit responds to affidavits filed by Madan Takale and Shrikrishna Adivarekar seeking probate of Sulochana's 2012 will. The case is set to be heard in Pune on October 9, 2024.

LWE restricted to 43 states, to be eliminated by 2026
Left Wing Extremism (LWE) has led to the menace being restricted to 43 districts as against 200 before 2014, sources said on Sunday. The sources, on condition of anonymity, said over 700 Maoists have been arrested, surrendered or killed in encounters between January and September this year and exuded confidence that the country will be free from Left Wing Extremism by 2026. In the first 100 days in office of the BJP-led NDA government's third tenure, the focus has been on implementation of the action plan to address the LWE, including building additional security camps in the Maoist affected areas.
