Replacing rice with other crops could help recover groundwater lost since 2000: Study
rice with other crops could help recover 60-100 cubic kilometres of groundwater lost since 2000 in north India, a study has found. Current cropping patterns — dominated by rice, which relies heavily on groundwater for irrigation — could result in a loss of about 13-43 cubic kilometres of groundwater if warming of the planet continues, a team of researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Gujarat, said. The researchers proposed shifting from existing cropping habits by cutting down on cultivating rice as a potential solution for sustaining the fast-depleting resource in a warmer world that threatens food and water security. «Replacing 37 per cent area of rice with other crops can recover 61 to 108 cubic kilometres groundwater compared to 13 to 43 cubic kilometres with current cropping pattern under the 1.5-3 degrees Celsius global warming levels,» the authors wrote in the study accepted for publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Nexus.

Rising freight costs, container shortages threaten exports; need urgent steps: GTRI
freight costs, shortage of containers and dependence on major shipping hubs and foreign carriers pose serious challenges to the country's exports, think tank GTRI said on Sunday. To address these challenges, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) recommended that India implement several strategies to boost domestic container production, enhance the role of local shipping companies, promote use of domestic containers, and strengthen local shipping firms. «India can lower its risk of global supply chain disruptions by boosting domestic container production, encouraging the use of locally made containers, and increasing the use of Indian shipping companies for transporting goods,» GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. Between 2022 and 2024, shipping rates for a 40-foot container have fluctuated significantly.

Psychological safety: Role of leaders in ensuring a psychologically safe workplace
Especially when it comes to raising questions regarding a leader’s strategy, they feel it’s better to keep the thoughts to themselves as they do not want to come across as someone overriding the leader’s authority. And this is exactly what happens when employees do not feel psychologically safe at work. The concept of psychological safety has been gaining traction in recent years as more and more leaders can be seen realising its benefits. When an employee feels safe enough to speak their mind and not hold back, they significantly contribute to driving innovation at work.

Haryana assembly elections: BJP leader Anil Vij says he will stake claim for CM's post if party comes to power
BJP leader and former Minister Anil Vij on Sunday said he will stake claim for the chief minister's post if the party returns to power in Haryana after the October 5 Assembly polls. The six-time MLA's remarks come at a time when the party has already made it clear that Nayab Singh Saini will be the chief minister if the BJP returns to power. Saini is also the party's chief ministerial face in the polls. «I never sought anything from the party till today...people from Haryana are coming to meet me. Even in Ambala, people tell me that I am senior-most why I did not become CM. On demand of the people, and on the basis of seniority, this time I will stake claim to become chief minister,» Vij said.

Nuclear secrets for ballistic missiles? UK, US express growing concerns over rumoured Iran-Russia nuclear agreement
nuclear technology with Iran in return for ballistic missiles. These missiles, believed to be used in Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, have prompted fears of a growing nuclear threat. Both leaders acknowledged the deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran during their discussions, which also covered the war in Ukraine, the Middle East crisis, and competition with China. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking earlier in London, warned, “For its part, Russia is sharing technology that Iran seeks – this is a two-way street – including on nuclear issues as well as some space information,” suggesting that Russia and Iran are engaged in destabilizing activities with global implications.

Kamala Harris may not win the US polls 2024 and end up conceding way more territories than was earlier expected, if reports are to be believed. A latest survey has revealed that she is leading Donald Trump by a mere 1.3 points, which is a negligible figure, considering the fact that this lead is within the margin of error, which means the risk of her losing out on the polls is very high at this point.
