No Padmar Ilish during Durga Puja! Bengalis face hilsa drought as Bangladesh ousts Hasina policy
Padmar ilish’ (hilsa from the Padma River) during Durga Puja this year. The interim government in Bangladesh has decided not to continue its hilsa export to India, prioritising domestic demand. The Fish Importers’ Association in Kolkata had requested the Bangladesh government to allow the continuation of hilsa exports as per the usual practice. Since 2019, under the leadership of the now-deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh had been exporting over 1,000 tonnes of hilsa to India in the month leading up to Durga Puja. On August 9, the association wrote to Bangladesh government adviser Touhid Hossain, asking to permit limited hilsa trade. However, Farida Akhtar, an adviser to Bangladesh's fish and animal resource ministry, has refused the request, citing rising domestic demand. Reports from Dhaka indicate that Akhtar has instructed the commerce ministry to ensure no hilsa exports this year.

Springfield, Ohio becomes meme central as Donald Trump’s debunked pet-eating claim fuels Simpsons parodies
Trump made a controversial claim about undocumented Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Trump stated that these immigrants were eating local pets, a claim quickly debunked by officials. Trump emphasized his stance on immigration by saying, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” Vice President Kamala Harris reacted with visible confusion to Trump's statement, which had previously gained attention on social media through Trump's running mate JD Vance. The claim went viral on X (formerly Twitter), where the phrase “They’re eating the dogs” trended and generated nearly 270,000 posts. Many users created humorous content, including setting the comment to music.

Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky? The origins of the day and the superstitions behind it
paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. Reports suggest that the fear of Friday the 13th results in businesses losing an estimated $900 million every time it occurs because people avoid traveling, scheduling important events, or even going to work. The roots of this fear are not entirely clear. In Western culture, the number 13 is often seen as unlucky, contrasting with the number 12, which symbolizes completeness with examples like the 12 months of the year and the 12 zodiac signs. According to HISTORY, one myth traces the fear to an early version of the Code of Hammurabi, which supposedly omitted the 13th law. However, this was later found to be an error by a translator. Biblical tradition also plays a role. There were 13 guests at the Last Supper, and Jesus was crucified the next day, which was a Friday. Charles Panati, in his book «Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things,» links the superstition to Norse mythology. In one story, Loki, the god of mischief, crashed a banquet, causing chaos and resulting in the death of Balder, the god of light.

China’s recovery likely dealt another blow from extreme weather
extreme weather this summer. As pressure builds on policymakers to roll out more stimulus, data due Saturday will show growth in industrial production slipped in August for a fourth straight month, in what would be its longest deceleration in almost three years. A slower expansion in activity also extended to retail sales and investment, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The widespread weakness would be a signal of how little traction the $17 trillion economy has generated in recovering from its worst stretch in five quarters. Heat waves — coupled with torrential rains that snarled travel and flooded farmland and mines — have added to setbacks for Beijing and its pursuit of growth around 5%, a goal most global banks now believe might be out of reach.

SC grants bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Excise Policy Scam ahead of key elections
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged excise policy scam. The decision came while the SC bench was announcing verdict on Kejriwal's plea seeking bail and challenging arrest by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The two-judge bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, had reserved the order on September 5, after the hearing was concluded. The AAP chief was arrested by the CBI on June 26. The bench, however, applied a few conditions before releasing the Aam Aadmi Party supremo. While reading out the judgment, Justice Surya Kant said, «We direct Arvind Kejriwal to be released on bail subject to bail bonds of Rs 10 lakhs.»

PwC spin-off Vialto to restructure $1.5 bln debt after cost overruns: Report
Vialto, which used to be part of PwC, is planning to restructure $1.5 billion of debt loaded onto the business in a private equity buyout after running into financial difficulty following its separation from the Big Four firm, the Financial Times reported on Friday. The firm is in talks with creditors, including Pimco and Blackstone, to reorganise its capital structure after cost overruns caused by rating agency downgrades, the newspaper reported. PwC sold its global mobility business to U.S. private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in 2022 in a $2.2 billion deal to raise capital to invest in faster-growing areas of its consulting business, the report said. The firm was renamed to Vialto after the buyout, it added.
