From classroom to nationwide call: Rethinking 'boys will be boys' after Kolkata incident
sexual violence in Kolkata has sparked a nationwide debate about raising boys with a healthy respect for women to prevent future crimes. Experts emphasised the need for societal change, starting with education and parenting. The commonly heard phrase “boys will be boys” is criticised for perpetuating gender inequality and excusing inappropriate behavior. Reflecting this ingrained mindset, an incident from a Class 7 classroom was mentioned in The Times of India report by Neha Bhayana. During a 15-items activity, a boy expressed disgust upon the mention of “bra” as a clothing item. Srividya Sivakumar, the English teacher, used this moment to highlight that a bra is just a garment and should not be associated with secrecy or shame. Later conversations revealed the students were aware of the Kolkata rape-murder incident involving a young trainee doctor. Given the recent wave of sexual violence, there is growing support for the slogan “sirf beti mat bachao, bete ko sikhao” (don’t just save your daughters, teach your sons). This motto underlines the importance of raising boys correctly to prevent future crimes.

India has trade surplus with 151 nations; deficit with 75 during Jan-June 2024, says GTRI
India has recorded trade surplus with as many as 151 countries such as the US and Netherlands, while the country has a trade deficit with 75 nations including China and Russia during the first half of this year, according to think tank GTRI. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India does not need to worry about the trade deficit from importing crude oil and coal, however, it must focus on reducing the industrial goods imports, especially from countries like China, as these threaten India's economic sovereignty. «Between January and June 2024, India had a trade surplus with 151 countries, representing 55.8 per cent of its exports and 16.5 per cent of its imports, totalling USD 72.1 billion,» GTRI said in a report. The biggest surpluses were with the USA (USD 21 billion) and the Netherlands (USD 11.6 billion) during January-June this year.

In Europe, consumer prices rose 2.2% in August from a year ago — the tamest since mid-2021 and significantly lower than the 2.6% pace a month earlier. Meantime, inflation in Tokyo — a leading indicator of the national data due in September — picked up speed in August, supporting the case for the Bank of Japan to continue raising rates at a gradual pace as the bank balances the need to support the economy.

With $2.6 billion, English Premier League leads summer transfer spending
English Premier League clubs again flexed their financial muscles by spending about $2.6 billion in the summer transfer window that closed Friday for Europe’s five big domestic leagues. And once again Chelsea was first in line with an outlay of $290 million as owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital continue to look for a winning combination at Stamford Bridge. The Saudi Pro League's window remains open for a few more days — enough time for more deals like the one announced early Saturday that will see striker Ivan Toney join Al-Ahli.
