First lady Jill Biden's shoes grab headlines at the DNC; here's what she wore
Jill Biden at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago garnered attention for her footwear selection. Biden arrived at the conference on Monday wearing a stunning pair of pointed footwear that soon became the center of attention, as per the reports of Yahoo entertainment. Ralph Lauren's sparkling blue minidress, which Jill Biden wore with a statement pair of silver shoes, was the talk of the occasion. The sharp, triangular shape of these pumps stood out against the blue color of her dress, highlighting her entire look. The heels are believed to be the Jimmy Choo Romy 85 Glitter Pumps, though this has not been formally confirmed. They are estimated to be between three and four inches tall. The coarse glitter fabric and leather construction of these shoes, which retail for about $825, give her entire ensemble a more sophisticated touch.

Britain's tech magnate Mike Lynch confirmed dead, mortal remains pulled from wreckage of superyacht
Italian Coast Guard announced on Thursday that the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from the wreckage of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily. The yacht, deemed unsinkable by its builders, was involved in a tragic incident where one woman, Lynch's daughter, remains missing. Lynch, who had recently celebrated his acquittal on fraud charges with his family and supporters, was among six people whose bodies were recovered by rescue crews following Monday’s disaster. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, sank in a storm early Monday while moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials suspect the vessel was struck by a tornado, or waterspout, which caused it to sink rapidly.

Indian cement makers to invest Rs 1.25 lakh cr in 2 years to meet growing demand
cement industry has lined up a capex of around Rs 1.25 lakh crore for FY25 to FY27 to meet the growing demand, said a report by rating agency CRISIL. During this period, the industry is expected to add 130 million tonne of cement grinding capacity, which is a fifth of the existing capacity. The investment will be driven by healthy demand outlook and the quest for market share, and the low capex intensity and strong balance sheets will keep the credit profiles of the companies stable, the report said. «The projected outlay will be 1.8 times the capex during the past three fiscals, yet the credit risk profiles of manufacturers will remain stable. This is owing to their continued low capex intensity and solid balance sheets with financial leverage sustaining below 1x on the back of strong profitability,» it said.

Disney-Reliance offer concessions for $8.5 billion India merger, but no cricket rights sale
Disney and Reliance have offered some concessions to secure an India antitrust approval for their $8.5 billion media merger, but are unwilling to sell any cricket broadcast rights, the biggest prize in the deal, two sources familiar with matter said. Reuters reported earlier this week that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) sent a warning notice to the companies expressing concern that their merged entity will have a tight grip on most cricket rights for TV and streaming in India, and can hurt advertisers. In their response, the companies have offered to go easy on advertising rate hikes and not increase them unreasonably, the sources said.

PhD groom’s demands for doctor bride sparks outrage: 'BMI under 24 and job optional’

His demands include a bride with a BMI under 24 who can manage all household duties without any help, while treating her job as optional. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada highlighted the viral post on X, stating, «This is the exact List Of Requirements that a Groom sent to a prospective bride who is a Medico. Groom is a PhD and Gold Medallist apparently. LOL.» The list begins with, “About Bride — Should be graceful, competent, and smart enough to handle her home and family matters. She should be vibrant and energetic, bringing color, variety, and liveliness through her physical contribution to the family’s lifestyle, including food, clothing, and overall well-being. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's lofty bet has grown fourfold: What lies ahead
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala to launch a new airline. Jhunjhunwala made a risky bet and invested $35 million for a nearly 40 per cent stake in the airline under his wife’s name. Later, Jhunjhunwala is said to have increased stake with his family now holding around 46 per cent. Many called Jhunjhunwala the Warren Buffett of India for his legendary success in equity markets. If Jhunjhunwala had heeded to an observation once made by Buffett, he wouldn't have put his money into an airline, especially in a new airline in India which is known as the graveyard of airlines for so many of them going bust in initial years. “The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender growth, and then earns little or no money. Think airlines. Here a durable competitive advantage has proven elusive ever since the days of the Wright Brothers," Buffett had said in a letter to the shareholders of his company. The risky bet of Jhunjhunwala, who died soon after the launch of the airline in August 2022, has now grown nearly fourfold in value, if a funding proposal is considered which values Akasa at over $350 million, more than four times the valuation at which the initial investment was made by the family of late Jhunjhunwala. ET has reported based on information from sources that a consortium of Premji Invest and Claypond Capital, the family offices of Wipro’s Azim Premji and the Manipal Group’s Ranjan Pai, respectively, are in talks to invest about $125 million for a significant minority stake in Akasa.

Nikah without a qazi! Assam approves new law for mandatory registration of Muslim marriages, divorces
Assam cabinet approved the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriage and Divorce Bill, 2024, mandating Muslims to register marriages and divorces with the government. This will eliminate the role of “qazis” in this process, and aims to curb child marriages. The proposed law will be presented in the legislative assembly during the autumn session beginning Thursday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on social media platform X, «Today the Assam Cabinet has approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024. It has two special provisions: Now the registration of Muslim marriages will be done by the government and not by the Qazi” and “registration of child marriage shall be deemed illegal.» District commissioners and registrars will be responsible for keeping the registration records, which are currently held by 94 qazis authorized under a British-era law from 1935. The new bill intends to prevent the registration of marriages involving minors, something that was previously handled by the qazis.

Indian Army starts process to buy more powerful and lighter artillery guns for Rs 7,000 crore
Indian Army has issued a tender for acquiring next-generation artillery guns to be designed, developed, and manufactured domestically. In the initial phase, the army requires 400 of these gun systems, with the demand expected to increase as older equipment is replaced. The procurement mandates that the guns be designed in India with more than 50% indigenous content based on the contract value. Private defence manufacturing companies that have invested significantly in developing artillery systems in recent years are keen on the Rs 7,000 crore acquisition of new Towed Gun Systems. Among the top contenders are Larsen & Toubro, Bharat Forge, and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. Larsen & Toubro has already supplied K9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns to the army. Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd have developed the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and are currently competing for the army order. «The advanced 155mm/52 caliber guns will be lighter and more versatile than the current artillery guns, including the ATAGS,» according to the report.
