Physical disabilities in senior citizens could have direct link to pollution: Study
physical disabilities, especially among elders, leading to difficulties in performing activities of daily living (ADL), reported TOI. The study was conducted in the US with 15,411 participants over an average follow-up period of about eight years. It found that at least 48 per cent of the participants aged 65 years and above reported new difficulties in performing daily activities due to exposure to pollution. The researchers discovered that higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10-2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were associated with increased risks of ADL disability. However, not all associations reached statistical significance. Moreover, ozone (O3) was found to be associated with a lower risk of ADL disability.

Researchers say an AI-powered transcription tool used in hospitals invents things no one ever said
Tech behemoth OpenAI has touted its artificial intelligence-powered transcription tool Whisper as having near «human level robustness and accuracy.» But Whisper has a major flaw: It is prone to making up chunks of text or even entire sentences, according to interviews with more than a dozen software engineers, developers and academic researchers. Those experts said some of the invented text — known in the industry as hallucinations — can include racial commentary, violent rhetoric and even imagined medical treatments. Experts said that such fabrications are problematic because Whisper is being used in a slew of industries worldwide to translate and transcribe interviews, generate text in popular consumer technologies and create subtitles for videos.

Govt should prioritise review of Income Tax Act, get it passed as money bill: SBI Research
SBI Research in a report has advocated for quicker review of the Income Tax Act as announced in Budget 2024-25. The report recommended that the revised Act be introduced as a money bill so that it can be passed within stipulated 75 days. This will not only simplify and streamline taxation process but also aligned with economic growth and inclusivity. The report recommended raising the TDS threshold on bank interest payments from Rs 10,000 to at least Rs 100,000. Allowing annual issuance of TDS certificates (Form 16A) instead of quarterly, aligning it with Form 16 for salaries, since Form 26AS is primarily used for credit and a flat tax rate for individuals earning over Rs 8 lakhs, specifically for those aged 60 to 80, with additional provisions for individuals aged 80 and above.

Vice President's biggest weakness: Kamala Harris admits she struggles to answer interview questions
CNN town hall, Vice President Kamala Harris admitted she sometimes struggles to answer interview questions on the spot. When asked about her biggest weakness, Harris candidly explained that she often needs time to research specific policy issues to give a thoughtful response, rather than an immediate answer. Known for sometimes delivering what critics call “word salad” responses, Harris laughed as she acknowledged, “I may not be quick to have the answer… because I’m going to want to research it.”

New Shepard – a reusable suborbital rocket – has plans to fly six astronauts on an 11-minute journey past the Kármán line (100 km), the internationally recognised boundary of space. The dates of the mission are yet to be made public. Earlier in July, the agency partnered with Blue Origin to secure six seats on the New Shepard rocket–of which India is a partner nation. Five seats are reserved for nations with few or no astronauts, while the sixth is open to anyone from a partner nation. Anyone can apply and will be based on public voting.
