Replacing rice with other crops could help recover groundwater lost since 2000: Study
rice with other crops could help recover 60-100 cubic kilometres of groundwater lost since 2000 in north India, a study has found. Current cropping patterns — dominated by rice, which relies heavily on groundwater for irrigation — could result in a loss of about 13-43 cubic kilometres of groundwater if warming of the planet continues, a team of researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Gujarat, said. The researchers proposed shifting from existing cropping habits by cutting down on cultivating rice as a potential solution for sustaining the fast-depleting resource in a warmer world that threatens food and water security. «Replacing 37 per cent area of rice with other crops can recover 61 to 108 cubic kilometres groundwater compared to 13 to 43 cubic kilometres with current cropping pattern under the 1.5-3 degrees Celsius global warming levels,» the authors wrote in the study accepted for publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Nexus.

Earth to get a new moon? Meet 2024 PT5, our temporary mini-moon for 53 days!
Earth is about to welcome a new mini-moon for a short period. Starting from September 29 until November 25, a small asteroid named 2024 PT5 will temporarily be captured by Earth's gravity, according to researchers Carlos de la Fuente Marcos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The asteroid, approximately 10 meters wide, was discovered through the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System. Researchers found that its size, speed, and trajectory are suitable for it to be caught by Earth's gravitational field for 53 days. During this time, it will orbit Earth before resuming its path through the solar system. «2024 PT5 will circle the Earth one time before it escapes back into space,» the researchers stated in their paper. This event is known as a «temporarily captured flyby,» where an asteroid enters Earth's gravity but does not make multiple orbits.

Earth set to capture temporary mini-moon asteroid 2024 PT5; Here's what you need to know
Earth will soon capture a temporary mini-moon, asteroid 2024 PT5, which was discovered on August 7, 2024, by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). Measuring about 10 meters in diameter, 2024 PT5 is set to loop around Earth from September 29 to November 25, 2024. During this period, it will follow a horseshoe-shaped trajectory but will not complete a full orbit around Earth before continuing its path around the Sun.

Chatting with ChatGPT found to soften beliefs of conspiracy theorists
conspiracy theorists, believing some of the most deeply entrenched conspiracies, such as those involving the COVID-19 pandemic, a new study has found. A team, including researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, designed the AI-model ChatGPT to be highly persuasive and engage participants in tailored dialogues, such that participants' conspiratorial claims were factually rebutted by the chatbot. For this, the researchers leveraged advancements in GPT-4, the large language model powering ChatGPT, that «has access to vast amounts of information and the ability to generate bespoke arguments.» A form of artificial intelligence, a large language model is trained on massive amounts of textual data and can, therefore, respond to users' requests in the natural language. The team found that among over 2,000 self-identified conspiracy believers, conversations with the AI-model ChatGPT lowered the average participant's beliefs by about 20 per cent.

Russian hackers hit Taiwan Stock Exchange and bank in a surprise attack
Russian hacker groups briefly disrupted Taiwanese financial platforms including the stock exchange and lender Mega Financial Holding Co.’s website, exposing the vulnerability of the island to foreign cyberattacks. Two groups that go by the handles “NoName057” and “RipperSec” on Telegram swamped targeted websites with a so-called Distributed Denial of Service attack, which caused unstable connection issues for the platforms Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Digital Affairs said Friday. During the incident, the Taiwan Stock Exchange detected web queries from overseas internet-protocol addresses at volumes several times bigger than usual, the bourse said in a separate text message to Bloomberg News.

Russian hacker groups hit Taiwan bourse, bank in surprise attack
Russian hacker groups briefly disrupted Taiwanese financial platforms including the stock exchange and lender Mega Financial Holding Co.'s website, exposing the vulnerability of the island to foreign cyberattacks. Two groups that go by the handles "NoName057" and «RipperSec» on Telegram swamped targeted websites with a so-called Distributed Denial of Service attack, which caused unstable connection issues for the platforms Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Digital Affairs said Friday. During the incident, the Taiwan Stock Exchange detected web queries from overseas internet-protocol addresses at volumes several times bigger than usual, the bourse said in a separate text message to Bloomberg News. Government websites and trading functioned normally on Friday. DDoS attacks are intended to overload systems rather than steal valuable information, and the stock exchange restored normal operations within a half-hour on Thursday. But the incident exposes the potential vulnerability of computing platforms in Taiwan, the world's biggest producer of advanced semiconductors and a potential flashpoint in a US-China conflict.

Was there a 650-foot tsunami in Greenland fjord that lasted for 9 days? This is what scientists are saying
About 45 kilometers from the landslide on Ella Island, the tsunami also caused damage to a distant landmark. Waves at least thirteen feet high struck the island, which is frequented by Danish military personnel and scientists. Fortunately, no one was there when the accident happened, even though cruise ships had only been in the region a few days earlier. This seiche lasted longer than any previously documented seiche, as these episodes usually end in a few hours. Also Read: Nate Silver warns Kamala Harris of poll gains post U.S Presidential debate
