IISc team develops super-capacitor that can be charged by shining light on it
IISc) and their collaborators have designed a new supercapacitor that can be charged by shining light on it. Such supercapacitors can be used in various devices, including streetlights and self-powered electronic devices such as sensors. Capacitors are electrostatic devices that store energy as charges on two metal plates called electrodes. Supercapacitors are upgraded versions of capacitors – they exploit electrochemical phenomena to store more energy, explains Abha Misra, Professor at IAP and corresponding author of the study published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, IISc said in a statement. The electrodes of the new supercapacitor were made of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods grown directly on Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO), which is transparent. It was synthesised by Pankaj Singh Chauhan, first author and CV Raman postdoctoral fellow in Misra’s group at IISc. Both ZnO and FTO are semiconductors with appropriately aligned energy levels, enabling superior performance of the photo-rechargeable supercapacitor. FTO, being transparent, allows light to fall on the optically active ZnO nanorods, which charges the supercapacitor. Chauhan said that two electrolytes – a liquid and a semi-solid gel – were used as the conducting medium between the electrodes, the statement added.

Sebi employees protest outside HQ, seek boss Madhabi Puri Buch's resignation
Sebi employees on Thursday gathered around the headquarters of the markets regulator in Mumbai and staged a silent protest demanding the withdrawal of Wednesday's statement blaming «external forces» for the protest and also sought the resignation of their boss Madhabi Puri Buch. After The Economic Times reported that Sebi officials made an unprecedented complaint to the finance ministry last month and accused the top leadership of fostering a toxic work culture, the regulator issued a press release on Wednesday evening saying that HRA (house rent allowance) issues of staff are being misguided by external elements to target credibility of Sebi and its leadership.

Potential outbreak-causing dangerous viruses found in China’s fur animals
coronaviruses and influenza, are harbored in raccoon dogs, mink and other animals farmed for fur in China, scientists found in the first in-depth investigation of the seldom-studied critters. Researchers scoured for viruses in the lungs, intestines and other tissues of 461 individual fur animals that were found dead due to disease across China. They identified 125 virus species, including 36 that were novel and 39 at potentially-high risk of crossing the species barrier, including spilling over to infect humans. Raccoon dogs and mink, valued for their soft pelts, carried the highest number of potentially dangerous viruses, according to the research, published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

China manufacturing centre of world due to US outsourcing policy: Amitabh Kant
China's emergence as the manufacturing centre of the world is largely a consequence of American policy, because if you look at the top 30 companies in the United States of America, 95% to 98% of the manufacturing is outsourced to China, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said here on Wednesday. Both the Chips Act and the Inflation Reduction Act of USA are protectionist in character. «It's important because if you want to shift towards net zero, it will be almost impossible to do it without India. And the reason for that is that green hydrogen manufacturing firm from India today is costing $4.5 per kilogram, whereas in the US, it will cost about $7-7.5 per kilogram. The extent of subsidisation will be enormous,» Kant said at an interaction with US G20 & G7 Sherpa and Deputy NSA Daleep Singh on India-USA Economic Partnership organised by the Observer Research Foundation. «If you want the world to move towards clean energy, reach the target of net zero, you want production of the lowest cost possible. And therefore, the size and scale of manufacturing from India, which India has demonstrated through procurement of LED bulbs, the prices for procurement of large scale buses, electric buses, prices for you, it needs the size and scale of a country like India to radically bring down the price to $1 per kilogram by 2030 and that capacity to do it only India has. And that's why, if you want the world to achieve success in net zero, you need to work with partners like India.»

Karnataka wants to create 4-5 more Bengalurus: state IT minister
Karnataka wants to create 4-5 more regions like Bengaluru, India's Silicon Valley, in the state, minister for electronics and information technology and biotechnology Priyank Kharge said. Speaking at an event organised by IT industry body Nasscom, Kharge said he wants to position Karnataka not just as an investment destination, but also a space for knowledge and skills. In a fireside chat with Nasscom president Debjani Ghosh at its Design and Engineering Summit 2024 on Wednesday, Kharge said this will bring in more innovation in the country and in the next 4-5 years, Karnataka will not just be innovating for India but for the world. In a recent post on microblogging portal X, Kharge said Karnataka is the fourth largest technology cluster in the world and the leader in the country in many verticals. The southern state has over one-third of India’s tech talent and close to 25,000 startups, 52 unicorns (startups with valuation of $1 billion or more) and 47 soon to be unicorns.

AI tool achieves 94% accuracy in telling apart fake from real research papers
ChatGPT. In a set of 300 fake and real scientific papers, the AI-based tool, named 'xFakeSci', detected up to 94 per cent of the fake ones. This was nearly twice the success rate seen among the more common data-mining techniques, the authors from the State University of New York, US, and Hefei University of Technology, China, said. "… we introduce xFakeSci, a novel learning algorithm, that is capable of distinguishing ChatGPT-generated articles from publications produced by scientists," they wrote in the study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Don't worry, your mobile phone won't give you brain cancer, says new WHO report
World Health Organization (WHO) has found no link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer. The analysis, covering studies from 1994 to 2022, concluded that despite the rise in mobile phone usage, there hasn't been a corresponding increase in brain cancer incidence. This review was conducted by 11 investigators from 10 countries. The review assessed the effects of radiofrequency used in mobile phones, as well as in TVs, baby monitors, and radar. Co-author Mark Elwood, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, said, «None of the major questions studied showed increased risks.» The researchers investigated cancers of the brain in both adults and children, as well as the pituitary gland, salivary glands, and leukemia. They looked into risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, and occupational exposure.
