Govt aims to cover 25pc of kharif paddy area with climate-resilient seeds
paddy area under climate-resilient seeds, a senior agriculture ministry official said on Monday. The move comes as erratic rainfall patterns have become increasingly common in recent years, threatening rice production in the country. India, the world's second-largest rice producer after China, cultivates paddy on over 410 lakh hectares during the kharif season. Speaking on the sidelines of ICAR's 96th Foundation and Technology Day celebrations, ICAR Director General Himanshu Pathak said, «While we have achieved 75 per cent coverage of climate-resilient seeds in wheat cultivation, the adoption in paddy is still limited.»

Possibly world’s rarest whale washes ashore in New Zealand, Offering unprecedented research opportunity
rarest whale washed up on a South Island beach in New Zealand, potentially providing scientists a unique chance to study the mysterious spade-toothed whale. The five-meter-long beaked whale, identified by its colour patterns and distinctive skull, beak, and teeth, was found on an Otago beach earlier this month, news agency Associated Press reported quoting New Zealand's conservation agency. «This is going to lead to some amazing science and world-first information,» said Hannah Hendriks, marine technical adviser for the Department of Conservation. The spade-toothed whale has never before been seen alive and remains a mystery in many aspects, including its population, diet, and habitat in the vast southern Pacific Ocean. If confirmed, this specimen would be the first available for scientific dissection, enabling researchers to map its relationship to the few others of its kind, understand its diet, and potentially discover its habitat. Previous spade-toothed whales found on New Zealand's North Island were buried before DNA testing could verify their species, thwarting scientific study.

Pharma industry seeks relief from price cap rule for cheap drugs
pharmaceutical industry has sought exemption from the government on fixation of ceiling prices for all low-priced formulations or those that are priced at up to ₹5 per unit. At a meeting last week, the Federation of Pharma Entrepreneurs (FoPE) lobby group also asked for the exemption of patented drugs from price control for 10 years instead of the existing five. According to FoPE, in the absence of a 10-year exemption, many companies are conducting research outside the country. «All formulations sold at ₹5 per unit i.e. per tablet, capsule, ml, gm may be exempted from provisions of ceiling price,» FOPE said in its presentation to the secretary, department of pharmaceuticals (DoP). «The industry has been asking for this exemption for a long time. It would be desirable to allow...small manufacturing units to be kept outside the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) provisions,» said a person in the know. Earlier, the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), which represents the country's biggest drug manufacturing companies, along with other lobby groups had asked for exemptions from price ceiling regulations for low-priced formulations. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) fixes the ceiling price of essential Schedule I drugs under the DPCO.

Savings to consumption via debt—warnings from India’s households
Also read | Household savings plummet to 5-year low in FY23: Where did young India’s savings go? Savings, debt, and consumption are key considerations for households. Given that households are the biggest savers in India—who help fund the government’s fiscal deficit, along with helping private firms to invest—and private consumption is the largest component of the GDP, the three variables mentioned above have much to reveal about the state of the economy.

How this Darjeeling-based coder is aiming to retire early with a ₹15-cr corpus
Slow and steady: How a passive approach secured this CEO's retirement future “Harsh, like quite a few of my clients, aims for financial independence by 50-55," Nayak said. “However, with NPS, if one decides to exit completely before 60, at least 80% of the accumulated corpus must be used to purchase an annuity, while the remaining 20% is paid out as a lumpsum. Further, the annuity is taxable at the individual’s slab rate." Mishra has opted for an NPS-E account—an equity-oriented NPS scheme with 75% equity allocation, unlike pure debt investments such as EPF and PPF.
