FTX Sam Bankman-Fried Avoids Second Trial
Prosecutors in the United States have made the decision not to proceed with a second trial against Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which has since gone bankrupt. The FTX drama has reached a turning point with this judgment, which comes after the company was found guilty of stealing from clients a month ago. Bankman-Fried was found guilty on all seven counts of fraud and conspiracy on November 2 by a jury. The charges were on the theft of $8 billion from FTX customers. As a result of this conviction, the former billionaire, whose personal wealth had earlier reached a staggering $26 billion, experienced a huge economic setback.

HCLTech, Wipro results today: Top watchlist for Dalal Street, trading strategy
Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, Dalal Street investors’ attention will shift to HCLTech and Wipro, who will release their quarterly numbers later today. Brushing off the seasonality factor, HCLTech is expected to report strong earnings for the December quarter, while Wipro may continue to disappoint the market. If we look at the performance of HCLTech and Wipro stocks in the last quarter, then the former has rallied nearly 19% and the latter about 16%. Entering into the new year, HCLTech shares are still holding on to gains, whereas the frenzy fizzled out in Wipro as the stock has corrected about 5% so far this month. Whether Wipro shares will correct further or HCLTech shares sustain the upward momentum depends upon their earnings scorecard.

Citi lowers Brent price outlook for 2024 and 2025 on oversupply fears
Citi Research on Friday lowered its Brent price forecasts for this year and 2025, citing oversupply concerns but expects prices holding above $70 per barrel in 2024 as OPEC+ keeps global oil markets «finely balanced». Citi cut its 2024 Brent price forecast by $1 to $74 per barrel and slashed 2025 forecast by $10 to $60 per barrel, but said in a note that recent activity in the Red Sea causing further tension in the Middle East could see near-term upside to the risk premium. The United States and Britain launched strikes from the air and sea against Houthi military targets in Yemen in response to the movement's attacks on ships in the Red Sea, a dramatic regional widening of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Brent crude futures were trading around $79 a barrel at 0337 GMT on Friday, while U.S.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said its consolidated net profit rose 2% on-year to Rs 11,058 crore in the December quarter even as its closest rival Infosys recorded a 7.3% decline at Rs 6,106 crore, due in large part to an unprecedented cyber-attack as well as hefty wage hikes. The muted YoY numbers found an echo in the sequential performance, with TCS reporting a 2.5% QoQ drop in profits in the third quarter of fiscal 2024, while that of Infosys declined 1.7%. Meanwhile, revenue dropped 0.4% sequentially for Infosys, while it rose 1.5% for TCS.

Human's ancient gene might be related to Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis
Scientists have assembled a huge database of prehistoric DNA based on the teeth and bones of around 5000 humans. Those humans lived across Western Europe and in certain parts of Central Asia, 34,000 years ago till the medieval times, as per a report. A thorough analysis of the distinctive and comprehensive pool of this prehistoric genetic information has revealed that the genes might have once been the protectors of the ancient hunter–gatherers or the shepherds of the Bronze Age from damaging pathogens. Further, the studies reveal that the genes may at present lead to a rise in the likelihood of neurodegenerative diseases which include Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis in Europeans, CNN reported.

Rename state as Bangla, we come way down alphabetical order in meetings: CM Banerjee to PM Modi
Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday seeking recognition of Bengali as a classical (Dhrupadi) language. She also urged the PM Modi to change Bengal's name to 'Bangla'. «We passed the name „Bangla“ in the state assembly twice but the Centre is not listening to us despite writing to them several times. If the names of states like Orissa and Bombay can be changed, then why not Bengal?» Banerjee said. «When we go to any meeting, West Bengal, due to alphabetical reasons, has to wait till the last.
