Former Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif sentenced to 12 years for threatening Dutch far-right leader
Geert Wilders. The court ruled that the statement by 37-year-old Khalid Latif — who lives in Pakistan and has not attended any stage of the trial or been detained in the Netherlands — should be regarded as incitement to murder, sedition and threat. Prosecutors said Latif posted a video in 2018, offering a reward for the murder of Wilders. That video came after Wilders said he planned to hold a contest for cartoons depicting caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Mohammad.

Alibaba stock slides after ex-CEO abruptly quits cloud unit ahead of IPO
Zhang quit just two months after concentrating his focus on cloud computing, raising concern over the unit's spin-off plan and possibility of discord at the top. New group CEO Eddie Wu will concurrently become acting CEO and chairman of a unit grappling with weak sales growth ahead of an initial public offering (IPO) penned for next year. «We have mixed thoughts on this news,» said Morningstar analyst Chelsey Tam in a client note. «We think this latest change was not planned back in June and there are concerns of disagreements among Alibaba's partners.» In June, Alibaba said Zhang would relinquish his group CEO role to focus on the cloud unit, the firm's number two money spinner. The Cloud Intelligence Group, valued at $41 billion to $60 billion earlier this year, is among five units Alibaba is spinning off as part of the biggest restructuring of its 24-year history. Alibaba said it will continue with its plan to spin off the cloud unit under a yet-to-be-appointed management team.

'Close to You' premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, Elliot Page hopes new film cracks open hearts & minds
Elliot Page hopes that his role in the new film "Close to You" moves people and cracks open the hearts and minds of viewers as it did for him. The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, explores the story of Page's character Sam, who returns home after gender transition for a family reunion, dreading the awkward questions and comments that he is likely to encounter. The film, which in part parallels Page's life, is co-written by Page and Dominic Savage who also directed the film. Page, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in «Juno» (2007), was assigned as female at birth and came out as transgender in 2020. The 37-year-old actor said that he was so nervous making a movie heavily reliant on improvisation, but Savage created a safe space for the entire cast to explore their characters. «It allowed us to feel free, limitless and dive into the material, and it worked,» he said. «So much of this movie is about connections, what it means to be human, and what it means to feel seen.

Vietnam Air, Boeing near $7.5 billion deal for 50 737 max planes
Boeing 737 Max jets in a deal valued at about $7.5 billion, a person familiar with the talks told Reuters on Sunday. Wording of the impending deal, which confirms a Reuters report from last week, comes as U.S. President Joe Biden visits Hanoi to boost ties with the former foe. Boeing and Vietnam Airlines did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The deal would be worth up to $7 billion at list prices, and usually companies that buy in bulk get discounts, but the person familiar with the talks did not comment on this. Boeing has a deal with Vietnam Airlines' rival VietJet for the sale of 200 of its 737 MAX planes. Vietnam was the world's fifth fastest-growing aviation market in 2022 when it lifted COVID-19 travel restrictions, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which predicts the country will serve 150 million air transport passengers by 2035. Boeing 737 Max jets were grounded worldwide for months after two fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019.
