Telegram defends data leak accusations by Star Health saying it cannot do 'policing' work
data leak at Star Health Insurance, Telegram's legal counsel said that the platform could remove specific accounts if the company provides concrete evidence that certain accounts were involved in data leaks, Reuters reported. The lawyer further said that while Telegram can take action with adequate proof, it cannot do 'policing work' by independently monitoring content. The report revealed that chatbots on Telegram were being used to leak personal data and medical reports of about 3 crore Star Health policyholders.

Baba Vanga's apocalypse, Nostradamus' turbulence predictions: But can India still win big on money front?
While these forecasts cast a shadow over the future, there is a perspective from a key man of the financial world. Ben Powell, Chief Investment Strategist for APAC at BlackRock Investment Institute, believes India could benefit from the increasingly complex geopolitical environment—if the country plays its cards right. Powell said, while the global geopolitical situation may seem daunting, it could present unique opportunities for India.«When I think about a country like India, if they play the game skillfully, we can say that so far this is the case, and there is an ability to benefit from some of the geopolitical complexity, which for sure is causing worry, but also can create opportunity for those countries which are skillful and flexible enough to navigate what is a complicated environment,» Powell told ET Now.

Canada to bring in 395,000 new permanent residents in 2025, almost 20% less than 2024
immigration policy, Canada is set to reduce the number of immigrants it will admit in the coming years. A government source told Reuters, the new targets will see a decrease from 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024 to 395,000 in 2025, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027. This decision marks the first time in years that the Canadian government has lowered its immigration targets. The number of temporary residents will also decrease, with 2025 projections targeting 300,000, down by 30,000 from previous levels. The shift in policy was initially reported by The National Post. Canada has traditionally been known for its openness to newcomers. However, the landscape has changed in recent years amid a national debate fueled by rising housing costs. As interest rates increased over the past two years, home affordability has become a pressing concern for many Canadians. A surge in the immigrant population has contributed to record levels, intensifying demand for housing and pushing prices further up.

State and industry input led US farm agency to relax bird flu testing order for cows
bird flu among the nation's dairy cattle after pushback from state and industry officials, according to state and federal records seen by Reuters. The communications, which have not previously been reported, show how the early federal response to the U.S. bird flu outbreak was shaped in part by industry interests reluctant to cooperate with burdensome regulation, and potentially contributed to transmission of the disease across state lines. The USDA's order, released in April after bird flu cases were discovered in cows in eight states, requires milk-producing dairy cattle moving across state lines to secure a negative bird flu test no more than seven days prior to travel. It also allows non-producing cattle headed to slaughter to cross state lines without a veterinarian's clean bill of health.

Antony Blinken heads to Middle East for new ceasefire push as Israel strikes Beirut
Antony Blinken headed to the Middle East on Monday to launch another push for an elusive ceasefire, seeking to revive negotiations to end the Gaza war and defuse the spillover conflict in Lebanon. Blinken's trip to the region is his 11th since the attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, that triggered the Gaza war. It comes as Israel intensifies its military campaign against Iran-backed militants — Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel carried out several strikes in Beirut's southern suburbs on Monday, including one near the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, the capital's main government hospital. Four people were killed, including a child, and 24 others were wounded, the health ministry said.

New cases of political violence roil US ahead of contentious election
Harris' White House campaign, punching a 74-year-old man in the head and calling another man a «n- supporter» as he fled. In northern Michigan, an assailant enraged by his hatred of Donald Trump used an all-terrain vehicle to run over and injure an 81-year-old man who was putting up a yard sign for the former president's reelection bid. The recent attacks were among at least 300 cases of political violence identified by Reuters since Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, including at least 51 incidents this year. With just two weeks to go before the Nov. 5 presidential election, the cases are part of the biggest and most sustained increase in U.S. political violence since the 1970s.

Retail group seeks antitrust probe of quick commerce companies Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto
retail distributors has asked the antitrust authority to investigate three quick commerce companies — Zomato's Blinkit, Swiggy and Zepto — for alleged predatory pricing, a letter showed on Sunday. Quick commerce is a new shopping rage in India, with companies promising deliveries of anything from groceries to electronics within 10 minutes, reshaping how Indians shop and challenging ecommerce giants such as Amazon. In a letter dated Oct. 18, All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), which represents 400,000 retail distributors of major companies including Nestle and Hindustan Unilever, told the antitrust body quick commerce firms were practising predatory pricing — or offering deep discounts and selling below cost to lure customers.

Annual inflation drops sharply below 2% target in September
inflation slowed sharply in September, falling below the Bank of Canada’s two per cent target, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.Annual inflation was 1.6 per cent in the month, down from two per cent in August, thanks largely to continually lower gasoline prices, the agency said. The yearly price pressures are now at their lowest levels since February 2021, StatCan said.Price hikes at the grocery store remained steady at 2.4 per cent year-over-year. Despite annual declines for seafood and nuts and seeds, fresh or frozen beef prices were up 9.2 per cent last month, edible fats and oils cost 7.8 per cent more and egg prices rose 5.0 per cent annually.Prices for airfare were down 4.4 per cent in September and fell 14.3 per cent on a monthly basis, which StatCan noted was typical of seasonal trends heading into the fall. While rent and higher mortgage costs continue to lift inflation, there was some cooling on the shelter front in September as well.

Israel's demining near Golan signals wider front against Hezbollah, sources say
Israel may expand its ground operations against Hezbollah while bolstering its own defences, its troops have cleared landmines and established new barriers on the frontier between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and a demilitarised strip bordering Syria, security sources and analysts said. The move suggests Israel may seek to strike Hezbollah for the first time from further east along Lebanon's border, at the same time creating a secure area from which it can freely reconnoitre the armed group and prevent infiltration, the sources said. While demining activity has been reported, sources who spoke to Reuters — including a Syrian soldier stationed in south Syria, a Lebanese security official and a U.N. peacekeeping official — revealed additional unreported details that showed Israel was moving the fence separating the DMZ towards the Syrian side and digging more fortifications in the area.

Rio said it would pay $5.85 per share for the U.S.-based lithium miner. That represents an almost 90% premium to Arcadium's closing price of $3.08 per share on Oct. 3, the day before Reuters exclusively reported on a potential deal between the two firms. Rio would gain access to lithium mines, processing facilities and deposits in Argentina, Australia, Canada and the United States to fuel decades of growth, as well as a customer base that includes automakers Tesla, BMW and General Motors.
