Biden fundraisers on hold, July donations plummet, sources say
Joe Biden's reelection campaign fundraisers are on hold, multiple Democratic sources involved in the events told Reuters on Friday, even as the Democratic Party planned to accelerate his nomination and he vowed to continue in the 2024 race. Biden had planned to raise money in Austin, Denver and California next week, but these plans have been shelved, at least for now, the sources said. The president tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday but said Friday he would return to the campaign trail next week. Biden's campaign said his fundraisers would go ahead as planned. «Reuters' sourcing is incorrect, and we look forward to a robust fundraising schedule,» campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said on Friday.

Body shaming vs freedom of speech! Court orders journalist to pay damages for publishing cartoon of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni
body shaming and freedom of speech to the fore, a Milan court has ordered a journalist to pay Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni damages of EUR 5,000 or $5,465 for making fun of her height in a social media post. It also awarded Giulia Cortese a suspended fine of EUR 1,200 for a jibe on Twitter, now known as X, reports Reuters. Giorgia Meloni compared to Benito Mussolini The controversy began in 2021 when Cortese published a mocked-up photo of Giorgia Meloni with a picture of the late fascist leader Benito Mussolini in the background. In the following tweet, the journalist wrote, «You don't scare me, Giorgia Meloni. After all, you're only 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall. I can't even see you.» The Italian prime minister launched legal action against the journalist after she clashed with her on social media.

Dollar rises on retail sales boost
retail sales proved to be firmer than expected, but was still soft enough to keep expectations intact for a rate cut from the Federal Reserve this year. U.S. retail sales were unchanged in June, topping expectations of economists polled by Reuters for a decline of 0.3%, as a drop in receipts at auto dealerships was offset by strength elsewhere, a show of consumer resilience that boosts economic growth prospects for the second quarter.

No rush for US Fed to cut rates, IMF's chief economist says
inflation data is allowing the Federal Reserve to begin a «very reasonable» shift toward easing rates, but a still-strong U.S. labor market means that there's no rush to make decisions, International Monetary Fund chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas told Reuters. Gourinchas said in an interview accompanying the release of new IMF growth forecasts on Tuesday it is better for the Fed to wait a bit longer to ensure there are no further upside surprises on inflation like those in the first quarter that delayed expected rate cuts to later this year. «Given the good news on inflation, it's very natural that the Federal Reserve is now starting to look at what's happening in the labor market and wanting to make sure that they don't overdo it» with tight monetary policy, Gourinchas said.
