Sisodia to approach Delhi HC against city court order rejecting bail in excise policy scam case
Manish Sisodia will approach the high court against a city court's Tuesday order, refusing bail to him in the alleged excise policy scam case, AAP said. In a statement, the party said that Sisodia's bail plea was rejected by the Rouse Avenue Court. The court dismissed Sisodia's bail pleas in corruption and money-laundering cases lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with alleged irregularities in the formulation and execution of the excise policy of 2021-22. Special judge Kaveri Baweja denied the relief, saying the stage is not right to grant bail to Sisodia.

Climate nudge: Let behavioural economics solve the planet’s crisis
In a remarkable judgement delivered on 6 April 2024, a day that should stay marked memorably on our calendar, the Supreme Court of India (SC) recognized that “….the people have a right against the adverse effects of climate change." And that “this right and the right to a clean environment… [is] necessary to articulate... as a distinct right. It is recognised by Articles 14 (right to equality) and 21 (right to life)." The SC judgement clearly spells out that the right to health (under Article 21) is impacted by factors that degrade the environment.

Foreign banks seek leeway on LEF rules for Nostro accounts
capital flows have been firm, foreign lenders have requested the banking regulator for flexibility in compliance with the central bank's Large Exposures Framework (LEF), particularly in handling certain types of accounts that facilitate global transactions. Banks have requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to consider excluding Nostro accounts from the exposures that are permitted under the LEF as sporadic instances of foreign flows that are meant for payouts over the next couple of days have resulted in breaches of the central bank's exposure norms, sources aware of the developments told ET. A Nostro account is one that a bank holds with an overseas lender which is denominated in the currency of that country. Such accounts help banks in enabling fund flows for international trade.

WhatsApp, take it easy, seek the law
WhatsApp cannot issue GoI — or any government, for that matter — a fait accompli over encryption. The right to privacy is by no means absolute in any system of law, and governments are well within their rights to seek with due process information for law enforcement. There can be debate over what constitutes due process, and how to go about satisfying its requirements. In these pursuits, law and technology need to come closer on the art of the possible. But absolute positions, such as threatening to stop services if forced to dilute encryption on occasion, can end up badly. Indian courts, unfortunately, have a long list of precedents that fetter fundamental rights. So, it would be better for everyone that things don't come to such a pass.
