'Rights of nature' are being recognised overseas; In Australia, local leadership gives cause for optimism
environment grows more urgent. As noted in the most recent State of Environment Report in 2021, we are increasingly turning to «measures of last resort» to prevent species extinctions and the collapse of ecosystems. In legal theory, the "rights of nature" acknowledges all Earth's natural elements as having an inherent right to exist and flourish.

Deven Choksey on what PSU rally, UPL rights issue will mean for market
Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd, says: “The government has made most of the PSU companies more accountable for the growth. And that is one of the reasons for which the market participants and investors have started buying into some of the PSU companies because there is a visibility of growth that one is seeing vis-à-vis the private sector players I think these companies probably require to demonstrate their amount of growth. If that is so, then I would justify the kind of rally which is right now in place as far as the PSUs are concerned.” You have been a market watcher for the longest time. Do you think we have the infrastructure in place for T+0, instant settlement for the equity cash segment? What will the impact of this be like? Deven Choksey: In a lighter tone, I think in our country we first create the product and then the infrastructure gets built. I am not going to be very surprised if infrastructure is going to get built over a period of time. However, the most important part out here is that this particular move is likely to work for the investors much more significantly. When you settle the trade on the same day, you probably bring in a significant amount of market confidence and the integrity quotient will probably increase significantly. So, from that point of view, I would think that it is going to benefit the investors the most. Whether we have the requisite infrastructure at this point of time in place, it will have to be tested.

The government's directive came just as the CMC, managing the affairs of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), had started the process of inviting bids for the sale of PSL and international cricket media rights. «The government's Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (sports) has issued a notification to the board making it clear that from now on, the CMC/PCB has to seek permission from the government before signing any major deal,» a reliable source said on Sunday.

COP28: Permanent Committee for Human Rights holds event highlighting links between climate change, gender-based violence
Permanent Committee for Human Rights in the UAE, in cooperation and partnership with the General Women's Union and the UN Women Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council in Abu Dhabi, organised an event titled "Climate Change and Ways to Mitigate Gender-Based Violence" at the Women's Pavilion at COP28. Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, delivered the opening speech and stressed that COP28 UAE placed the issue of women and gender equality in the context of climate action as a top priority. Furthermore, he added that the conference's allocation of a full day of the presidential programme to confront this issue underscored the criticality of elevating the role and participation of women in tackling climate change. The conference presidency was also keen to enhance the skills of national cadres and support the presence of women in its various activities, adding that the UAE negotiating team included many young talented women specialized in climate diplomacy and international negotiations, which affirms Emirati women's active role in achieving UAE sustainability. He maintained that the UAE is active internationally in addressing climate change, and as a member of the Human Rights Council, and in partnership with the United Kingdom, submitted a draft resolution on girls' education that was adopted by the Council at its 54th session without a vote.
