Why are NBFCs like L&T Finance & Mahindra Finance failing to turn? Viral Shah answers
Viral Shah, VP, IIFL Securities, says L&T Finance shifted its focus to retail about three to four years ago, targeting profitable yet riskier segments like microfinance and personal loans, along with mortgages. However, this reliance on high-risk areas is causing issues. In contrast, Mahindra Finance struggles due to its limited expansion beyond vehicle finance and its dependence on its parent company, compounded by a tendency to overpromise and underdeliver. I want to understand the entire setup for the NBFC space. We are done with the Q3 earnings and there are a lot of hits and misses in the NBFC space. What is the setup looking like? Viral Shah: I would say now we are in a realm where we need to differentiate between different NBFCs. There are fixed rate NBFCs; floating rate NBFCs, primarily HFCs, and in terms of the broad theme that we are now going ahead looking at it is that there is going to be a continued moderation in growth. In pockets, the asset quality is still worsening. In some pockets, there are signs that it could be peaking or it is closer to peaking in a couple of quarters and in some other segments, we may see that the tailwinds of rate cuts that RBI has done probably will flow through in the numbers, though of course it is built into the expectations already.

Commodity Talk: Will Trump tariff on steel, aluminium trigger dumping into India? Naveen Mathur of Anand Rathi explains
India is not a major exporter of metals to the US, but any global price shift would surely impact the domestic pricing also, said Naveen Mathur, Director-Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Share & Stock Brokers. We may see a glut with respect to the oversupply, he opined highlighting that the other countries may start dumping the goods into India. Edited excerpts: Do you see a significant impact on global metal prices once the Trump tariffs come into force and while India is not a major metal exporter to the US, will it have a trickle-down effect on the domestic industry? As we all know, post Mr Trump's inauguration in mid of January, the markets have been pretty volatile largely because of the policies, the global uncertainties with respect to tariffs. The tariffs would definitely push up the metal prices in the US due to restricted imports. While the excess supply in the global markets, particularly China and the EU, may cause price fluctuations, India would definitely have an indirect impact or I should say it is a mix of direct and indirect impact.

Banking and Power sectors poised to lead market recovery: Dharmesh Shah
«If you look at the market breadth again this is a good indicator, sentimental indicator to understand how the things pan out going forward. The percentage of total 200-day moving average of total CNX 500 is currently around 12% to 13%,» says Dharmesh Shah, ICICI Direct. This is the fourth consecutive session where we are pretty range bound on Nifty. In fact, today we even broke down below the psychological support levels of 22,800. Tell us from here on what are the levels that you are watching out for, for next week? Dharmesh Shah: Yes, definitely, if you look at the market for last five to six trading sessions, we have been trading this range of 23,000 to 22,800. So, almost 200 to 300 points trading range has been.

Time to buy quality stocks amid market fall: Deven Choksey
«Maybe whatever the fall is left, the panic fall, capitulation fall, whatever you want to name it as, I think that could possibly get arrested in a sooner period of time and should that be, then the market will have the signs of recovery,» says Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd. It is not a vicious selling, it is not ferocious, but it is painful. When will the tide turn because the news flow is not bad, but the technicals are looking very bad. Deven Choksey: 22,800 Nifty has been tested twice and right now also it is coming under attack. So, certainly, technically you are right, absolutely, the market is showing the signs of weakness. And the minds are in the capitulation state. If not, the transactions. So, at least that situation is also definitely working against the overall mood and the sentiment of the market.
