An SIP investing lesson from a Bruce Springsteen concert
Lonesome Day. Fifteen minutes on, they were playing my favourite Springsteen number No Surrender, and the energy in the stadium had gotten people in the rows in front of us on their feet, and soon everyone was standing and singing along with the E Street Band. Of course, once people in front of us were standing we also had to stand up in order to get a better view of the stage.

Another gender row at Paris Olympics: Sports commentator misgenders US athlete live on air
gender controversy at the Paris Olympics, BBC host Steve Backley found himself in the spotlight for using incorrect pronouns when introducing American shot putter Raven Saunders during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Saunders, 28, who identifies as non-binary and uses «they/them» pronouns, was competing in the women’s shot put qualifying round when the incident occurred. Saunders, known for their silver medal win at the Tokyo Olympics and their bold, colourful persona, appeared on the field with hair dyed green and purple and a mask covering much of their face. Backley, however, repeatedly referred to Saunders as «her» during the broadcast, prompting his co-host, Jazmin Sawyers, to correct him live on air. Sawyers gently reminded him, saying, «Raven Saunders is actually non-binary and wearing the mask there, we’re quite used to seeing them with interesting attire.»

Hindus should write names on their shops: Sadhvi Pragya
BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has asked Hindu shopkeepers to display their names on commercial establishments they own, apparently to differentiate Hindus from non-Hindus. The former Bhopal MP made this appeal amidst a row over directives issued by the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to highlight names of owners and staff of eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes. These directives were subsequently stayed by the Supreme Court which on Monday extended its July 22 interim order. Days after the Ujjain mayor claimed shop owners had been directed to display their names and phone numbers on boards, the Madhya Pradesh government on July 21 clarified no such instructions had been issued for shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in the state, and there is no such compulsion. «I appeal to every Hindu to write their name on their shops and establishments. Those who write their names are Hindus and those who do not write are not Hindus. No one can stop you from writing your name because the country belongs to you. Rest everyone is sensible,» Thakur tweeted on Saturday.

Anil Deshmukh row: Conduct narco test on Sachin Waze immediately, says Shiv Sena
Shiv Sena on Monday demanded a narco test be conducted on dismissed policeman Sachin Waze to unearth the «truth» amid a row over bribery allegations against ex-Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, which has hotted up the political scene. Sanjay Shirrsat, the spokesperson of Shiv Sena headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, claimed Waze- who was reinstated in the Mumbai Police force when Uddhav Thackeray was chief minister- was a leader of the undivided Shiv Sena. «Waze commanded respect in the party organisation. He used to attend meetings of the Home Department (headed by Anil Deshmukh when Maha Vikas Aghadi was in power) and report to Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray),» Shirsat claimed while talking to reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. If Sachin Waze is ready to undergo a narco test, then it should be conducted immediately so that the truth will come out in this case, the Shiv Sena leader said.

RBI's MPC unlikely to announce a change in repo rate, according to an ET poll
RBI) is likely to keep interest rates unchanged this week as high food prices prevent any tilt toward softer policy, but easing core inflation and a global turn toward lower borrowing costs could make a case for the central bank to shift to a neutral stance in the next quarter that coincides with the country’s traditionally busy economic season. An ET poll consisting of 12 respondents unanimously predicted the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) would keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% at the end of its three-day meeting on August 8. This would mark the ninth consecutive bi-monthly meeting in which the rate-setting panel could maintaine a status quo on rates. The repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends to banks.

Chinese envoy to Nepal kicks up another row via social media
Chinese ambassador to Nepal kicked up another controversy through social media, drawing the ire of the local population. In the latest such instance, Chen Song faced criticism for passing a «joke» about a bus accident in Nepal. On July 28, while reposting a news article titled «19 kg magnet, brought to search for the lost bus, is itself missing», he wrote on X, «Find the magnet then». He was referring to the July 12 accident, when a bus travelling from Kathmandu to Gaur and another coming from Birgunj to Kathmandu were swept away into the Trishuli river at Simaltal, Chitwan district of Nepal. Out of 65 passengers, 62 were missing. The whereabouts of the buses and most of the passengers are still unknown. Upon the request of the Nepal government, India sent a 12-member diving team with magnets to assist in the search. The Chinese ambassador's comments appeared to be targeted not only at Nepal but also at the failure of the Indian team, according to Kathmandu-based people.
