markets UPS President Cycling Schools Interviews Housing demand strong, prices to grow this year at more than inflation rate: CREDAI Prez Boman Irani
Housing demand continues to be strong and is expected to grow further on the back of tax incentives offered in the Budget and a recent repo rate cut, CREDAI President Boman Irani said. CREDAI is an apex body for private real estate developers. In an interview with PTI, Irani asserted that there are no signs of demand slowdown in the Indian housing market, rather it will continue to rise in the long-term horizon. However, he said there could be an impact in some markets that are «over-heated» but overall at pan-India level there are no concerns at all on the growth going up only. Short-term blips in a real estate cycle is not something that we need to worry about. We need to see long-term growth," he told PTI in Nashik, where CREDAI recently organised its two-day conference.

economy Southern Injustice students country strain Schools Central taxes as a proportion of total revenue receipts have reduced significantly: Tamil Nadu Finance Minister
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Friday stated that the central transfers from the Union Government in the form of Grants-in-aid and share in central taxes as a proportion of total revenue receipts have reduced significantly. The Tamil Nadu Minister while presenting the state budget for 2025-26 said that the state's own revenues have been increasing due to the efforts of the state Government. «While the State's Own Revenues have been increasing due to the efforts of the Government, the central transfers from the Union Government in the form of Grants-in-aid and share in central taxes as a proportion of total revenue receipts have reduced significantly,» Thennarasu said. He said that withholding of funds under Samagra Shiksha, denial of funds under NDRF for Cyclone Fengal, and a paltry release of Rs 276 crore for two massive disasters in the form of Cyclone Michaung and the unprecedented rainfall in southern districts have all caused severe strain on the State Finances. «In 2024-25, the grants-in-aid are estimated to substantially reduce to Rs.20,538 crore in the Revised Estimates, as compared to the Rs. 23,354 crore projected in the Budget Estimates. Anticipating the release of the entire funds due to the State under Samagra Shiksha in the ensuing year, the Grants-in-aid receivable from the Union Government are estimated at Rs.23,834 crore in Budget Estimates 2025-26,» he added.

Johns Hopkins University said Thursday it is being forced to lay off more than 2,000 employees in the aftermath of the Trump administration's massive reduction in foreign aid funding. «This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to wind down critical work here in Baltimore and internationally,» the school, a leading institution of scientific research, said in a statement. Hopkins, in Maryland's largest city an hour's drive north of the US capital, is eliminating more than 2,000 positions — 1,975 in projects across 44 countries and 247 jobs in the United States. The cuts impact several key programs, including the university's medical school and school of public health, and Jhpiego, a global health non-profit organization founded at the university more than 50 years ago and which works to improve health in countries worldwide. «Johns Hopkins is immensely proud of the work done by our colleagues in Jhpiego, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the School of Medicine to care for mothers and infants, fight disease, provide clean drinking water, and advance countless other critical, life-saving efforts around the world,» the university said.

Remark Schools Courts Interviews politician Investigations Court schools Abu Azmi over Aurangzeb remarks, cautions him to exercise restraint during interviews
Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has been cautioned by a Mumbai court to exercise restraint during interviews as any «irresponsible» statement by a senior politician like him can spark riots. Additional Sessions Judge V G Raghuwanshi schooled Azmi while granting him anticipatory bail on Tuesday in a case filed against the SP legislator for his remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The offence concerns some statements made during an interview and it means police do not need custody for seizure of any article or interrogation, the court said in the order, a copy of which was made available on Thursday. Noting that Azmi is a politician and businessman and it was improbable that he would run away from the course of justice, the judge said it was a «fit case to exercise discretion» in his favour. «Before parting with the order I would like to caution the applicant (Azmi) to exercise restraint on himself while giving interviews, having regards to prevailing circumstances. Any irresponsible statement can flare riots and create law and order problems,» the court said. «I hope the applicant, being a senior politician, will understand his responsibility,» it added.

Keki Mistry, Former VC & CEO, HDFC & Independent Director in Several Companies, says he would be surprised if India’s growth is not 7% or very close to 7% by the second half of the year. If monsoons are good, food prices continue to remain low, and there is low geopolitical uncertainty, then we can cross 7% in the latter part of the year. Mistry also says that the risk to India from tariff threat is far lesser than the risk to countries like China, Canada or any of these European countries. India is hugely dependent on the domestic economy though exports make for 22-23% of GDP and the US accounts for 16-17% of total exports. So, the proportion of the impact it will have on India will be lesser than in most other countries. FMCG, retail, also the IT sector will do well because of rupee depreciation.

Many also objected to the name of the programme, saying that such a suggestive name would attract the attention of pedophiles.
