BSF seeks additional manpower for drone-affected Punjab border
BSF has sought the deployment of an additional battalion to check the onslaught of cross-border drones carrying drugs and ammunition and curb infiltration along the Punjab front of the India-Pakistan border. The force currently has about 20 battalions to guard the more than 500-kilometre-long front, out of which 18 are «actively deployed» at the border while the rest are mobilised in view of the requirements at the Attari integrated check post in Amritsar and the Kartarpur corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district. The drone menace that started around 2019-20 along this front is dominant in the border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran. Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls: Thankful to Home Minister Amit Shah for talking about NC's manifesto, says Omar Abdullah
Omar Abdullah Sunday said he was thankful to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for noticing his party's election manifesto. People who were not ready to read it, have now been compelled to go through it now, Abdullah added. «I am thankful to the home minister from the core of my heart for talking about our manifesto. For a small party, contesting an election in a far-flung area of the country, it is a huge thing that the country's home minister has seen our manifesto,'' Abdullah told reporters here after a party function. Shah on Friday slammed the Congress for its alliance with the NC for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, accusing the party of repeatedly risking the country's unity and security in its „greed for power“.

India sets out to close a critical accounting standard gap to align itself with global peers
NFRA), in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), is urging the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to update a crucial accounting standard to align with revamped international norms, addressing a gap that has existed for over two decades, ToI reported on August 26. On Monday, the NFRA board will deliberate on updating SA 600 to match the International Standard on Auditing 600 (ISA 600), which has undergone revisions in 2009 and 2023. This move follows the NFRA's observation of discrepancies in various cases, including those involving Reliance Capital, IL&FS, DHFL, and Café Coffee Day. The NFRA, responsible for overseeing auditors and audit firms of large and listed companies, initiated discussions in May to update these standards, aiming to close the regulatory gap. Sources have indicated that SA 600 has been particularly contentious. While some chartered accountants argue that smaller firms might be adversely affected, regulatory sources insist that protecting small investors' interests is paramount.

Telegram’s Pavel Durov made a ‘miscalculation’ fleeing Russia, says Kremlin
Medvedev on Sunday claimed that Pavel Durov, founder of the Telegram messaging app, «miscalculated» by fleeing Russia. Durov was arrested on Saturday at Paris Le Bourget airport in France for offences related to the app and failing to address its criminal use, and appeared in court on Sunday. Medvedev, now deputy head of Russia's Security Council, asserted Durov's belief he could avoid cooperating with security services abroad was mistaken. Medvedev mentioned a past conversation with Durov where he warned him that refusing to cooperate with law enforcement would cause problems in any country. Despite this, Durov, who holds multiple citizenships, left Russia in 2014 after refusing to comply with government orders to shut down opposition groups on his previous social media platform, VKontakte. «He miscalculated,» Medvedev stated. “For all our common enemies now, he is Russian – and therefore unpredictable and dangerous.” Medvedev added, «Durov should finally realise that one cannot choose one's fatherland.»

GenAI levels the playing field: Mercedes Soria of robotics security company Knightscope
artificial intelligence can enable Indians — even those who do not have a technical background — to solve the country’s most pressing problems, according to Mercedes Soria, executive vice-president and chief intelligence officer at US robotics security company Knightscope. “Now, all we have to worry about is, are we solving the right problem,” said Soria, who was on an India visit to share her expertise on machine learning and AI. Soria is a speaker for the United States Department of State on technology and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). “In the future, it’s not going to be so much that you have to be technical to have a startup and solve a problem. It’s going to be more of, do you identify the right problem to solve, and then the technology like Gen AI will help you,” she said. Problems can be solved even by those who can’t write a single line of code, she added. This is a ‘massive opportunity’ for India with its large population and unique local issues. Young people in India, including high schoolers, are very familiar with and using tools like ChatGPT, whereas in the US this is seen more among those in university, Soria noted.
