Kotak CEO reveals a lot on RBI cuts, deposit wars and banking’s next big moves
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to announce another rate cut in April, and its impact on bank fixed deposit (FD) rates remains a key question. Ashok Vaswani, Managing Director and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, in a interview to ToI said he believes that while the previous 25-basis-point cut has not yet led to lower deposit rates, a total reduction of 50-75 basis points could start influencing term deposit pricing. He expects significant movement in the banking sector over the next 6-12 months. Deposits remain a critical focus for banks, with last year witnessing a competitive battle for attracting funds. Vaswani acknowledges that securing deposits is not just about volume but also pricing. To sustain growth, Kotak Mahindra Bank is leaning on product innovation, customer-centric offerings, and its digital platform, 811. However, liquidity constraints persist, making it too soon to determine whether conditions will improve. The bank continues to monitor macroeconomic trends closely. European Union has urged its citizens to stockpile enough food and other essential supplies to sustain them for at least 72 hours if crisis happens, the European Commission has said. “In case of extreme disruptions, the initial period is the most critical,” the document says, setting out possible scenarios, from war to cyber attacks and deadly disease to climate-driven floods, reports Politico. In a fresh guidance issued on Wednesday, the commission stressed the need for Europe to shift its mindset, to foster a culture of “preparedness” and “resilience.” ALSO READ: 'Elon, I want to thank you': Trump makes it official, makes big statement amid Tesla Takedown protests

China President Xi tests US allies in Indo-Pacific as Trump is busy elsewhere
Xi Jinping is making China’s presence more felt across the Indo-Pacific region by testing US allies on sensitive issues, as Donald Trump’s attention is taken up elsewhere. From sending warships off Australia’s coast for unprecedented shooting drills to flying a record number of “grey zone” balloons around Taiwan, and putting pressure on Thailand over human rights issues, Beijing is ramping up efforts to project power in the region. China also issued a strongly worded warning on Taiwan to Tokyo — which doesn’t officially recognize Taipei — against “colluding” with separatists. Trump’s sudden embrace of Russia, skepticism of NATO allies and tariffs that punish friendly nations have fueled concerns about the US as a reliable security partner in Asia, where Washington has for decades provided a buffer to Beijing.

RBI set to double investment limit for foreign individuals, sources, memo say
Reserve Bank of India is set to double to 10% a cap on investment by individual foreign investors in listed companies, as it aims to boost capital inflows, according to two senior government officials and documents reviewed by Reuters. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), pressured by poor earnings, high valuations and prospects of U.S. tariffs, have pulled more than $28 billion out of Indian stocks since September's record high in the benchmark NSE Nifty 50. To boost foreign investment, India is widening to all foreign investors benefits it had until now restricted to overseas Indians, while also raising applicable investment limits, the officials said. «It is felt that these proposals may be implemented as early as possible,» the central bank told the government in a letter last week, pointing to disruption in capital inflows among recent developments in the external sector. Emails seeking comment from the finance ministry, the central bank, and the market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), did not get any response.

Japan eyeing 'appropriate' response to US auto tariffs
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday 25 percent tariffs «on all cars that are not made in the United States» effective 12:01 am eastern time on April 3. «We have to think about appropriate measures following this announcement. Naturally, we will consider all options,» Ishiba told parliament. «Japan has made significant investments and significant job creation, which doesn't apply to all countries… We are the number one (country) in investment in the United States,» Ishiba added. «The US president's understanding on this is significantly deepening. However, various things are happening, so we are considering all kinds of countermeasures, and those exist as our options.»

Taking relentless action on wilful defaulters: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman Wednesday said «relentless action» is going on against wilful bank defaulters and that loan write-offs do not mean waivers as borrowers remain liable to repay their dues. «Banks continue to pursue recovery actions in written-off accounts using various mechanisms,» she said, responding to the discussion on Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the Rajya Sabha. The upper house, subsequently, gave its nod to the bill that seeks to provide options to the depositors for either successive or simultaneous nominations besides allowing public sector banks (PSBs) to transfer unclaimed shares, interest, and bond redemption amounts to investor protection fund besides other changes. The bill has already secured Lok Sabha's nod.

Bangladesh isn't accepting minorities' persecution: MEA to Parliamentary committee
Foreign secretary Vikram Misri along with other senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on the Indo-Bangladesh relations. The panel is chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Officials are also learnt to have expressed concern that the Bangladesh government has «not only not acknowledged the systematic persecution of minorities but has sought to downplay the scale and nature of violence against Hindus since 2024», sources said. The officials also apparently referred to the statement of Mohammed Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh, where he termed the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh as media exaggeration. Officials also expressed concern that persecution against minorities has been characterised as «political killings» of Awami League members rather than communal violence. When asked about the Bangladesh Army, it was suggested that they are out of barracks to take control of the law and order in the neighbouring nation. Officials suggested that India is interested in advancing mutual interests and priorities with Bangladesh, sources said.

Elon Musk blames ‘stone-age’ US systems for Signal chat security breach
Elon Musk is investigating how The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was inadvertently added to a Signal group chat involving high-ranking U.S. national security officials. The chat reportedly contained discussions on upcoming military airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The breach, revealed in The Atlantic on Monday, has sparked outrage, with bipartisan calls for accountability. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Musk’s involvement, stating that he would «figure out how this number was inadvertently added» and help «ensure this can never happen again.»

Canada's Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya barred from running under party's banner over alleged ties to India: Report
Canada's Liberal Party revoked Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya's bid to run for the party leadership and his nomination in his own Ottawa Nepean constituency over his alleged ties to the Indian government, a media report said on Wednesday. Citing a source with top-secret clearance, the Globe and Mail daily reported that Arya, who visited India last August and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had not informed the government of that trip even though bilateral relations are in a deep freeze. The Liberals have never revealed why they barred the three-term Liberal MP from the party's recent leadership race or from running again in Nepean constituency, the paper said. Citing the source, the daily reported that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had briefed the government about Arya's «alleged close ties to the government of India, including its High Commission in Ottawa». Liberal Party officials who have security clearances and had received a general CSIS briefing on foreign interference also had concerns about Arya, a Liberal source said. The decisions to remove Arya as a candidate for the leadership and Nepean nomination were solely made by the Liberal Party and were not on the advice of CSIS, sources said.
