HDFC bank raises $1 billion in 3-yr syndicated loan
HDFC Bank, the country's largest lender by market value and the biggest Nifty constituent by weight, has doubled its overseas borrowing through a term loan syndication from a clutch of 23 global banks in a greenshoe option to the primary facility, having initially borrowed $500 million from Japan's largest lender MUFG in December. HDFC Bank, which merged its mortgage lending parent into itself last year, chose to exercise the green shoe option to raise another $500 million, taking the total proceeds to $1 billion in what is the largest three-year overseas loan organised by an Indian bank. «The syndication was completed on Thursday and the full green shoe option was exercised by HDFC Bank due to the strong demand from foreign banks,» said a person aware of the deal. «Banks from Asia, the Middle East and Europe participated in this syndication, which is the largest three-year syndication by an Indian bank for general corporate purposes.»

Focus on L-G as Arvind Kejriwal continues to be CM; experts: Any place can be jail
Arvind Kejriwal continued as Delhi chief minister after his arrest, experts said that nothing barred him from remaining CM, though the future course of action would depend on Delhi's lieutenant-governor. Technically, Kejriwal can continue as CM till he is convicted in a case. However, there are other practicalities in administering a state from custody or jail. The jail manual lays down specifically that an undertrial is allowed meetings only twice a week. Conducting Cabinet meetings and maintaining secrecy of government files would be difficult if carried to the Tihar Central Jail. Undwrtrials are allowed only specific documents, including court applications and vakalatnamas. The practical difficulties, however, can be sorted if L-G Vinai Saxena exercises powers under the Prison Act to declare any facility as 'prison'. Former law officer of Tihar Central Jail Sunil Kumar Gupta told ET there have been at least two such precedents when earlier L-Gs exercised the power.

Apple turned on a buried iPhone setting. You might want it off.
Apple’s newest iPhone software has a switch turned on by default: “Discoverable by Others." This creepy-sounding setting is leading people to think their name and location are being shared without their knowledge or consent. That’s not the case, says Apple, but you might want to turn it off anyway. Last year, as a part of iOS 17.2, Apple released the Journal app.

Russia, China veto US bid on Gaza 'ceasefire' at Security Council
Russia and China on Friday vetoed a US-led draft resolution at the Security Council on a ceasefire in Gaza, with Moscow accusing Washington of a «hypocritical spectacle» that does not pressure Israel. The United States, Israel's main ally which has vetoed previous ceasefire calls, put forward the resolution which for the first time would have supported «the imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire» and condemned the October 7 attack by Hamas.

ASI starts court-ordered survey of disputed Bhojshala complex in MP's Dhar district
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Friday conducted survey of the controversial Bhojshala/Kamal Maula Mosque complex situated in the tribal-dominated Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh and made preparations for using carbon-dating equipment, officials said here. A 15-member ASI team along with senior local police and district administration officials readied the site for scientific assessments following a Madhya Pradesh High Court directive to conduct a 'scientific survey' within six weeks. The high court, on March 11, directed the ASI to carry out a 'scientific survey' within six weeks of the Bhojshala complex, a medieval-era monument that Hindus believe is a temple of Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati), while the Muslim community calls it Kamal Maula Mosque. During the first day of the survey, members of the Muslim community gathered to offer Friday prayers amidst tight security arrangements, the officials said.

Explained | Upside risk on inflation to export value, here's how the Red Sea crisis will impact Indian economy in FY25
Change in trade route: Container ships routing through the Suez Canal are shunning and rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope. By the first half of February 2024, container tonnage crossing the Canal fell by 82 per cent, and vessel tonnage passing through the Cape of Good Hope increased by 60 per cent. • Increase in the distance and operational shift due to rerouting of ships: The extra miles travelled and days lost due to trade diversion has translated into additional costs such as fuel costs and lost value of time-sensitive cargo.

The New Normal for Mortgage Rates Will Be Higher Than Many Hope
Interest rates are likely to come down later this year, with the Federal Reserve on track to start cutting rates. But mortgage rates might not follow as quickly. That is because mortgages, and mortgage-backed bonds, just aren’t as in demand in financial markets as they were in the years before the Fed began to start to tighten in 2022.

‘A nightmare’: SIM card swap scam hits Toronto-area couple for more than $140,000
Wayne Stork and his wife Diana had not heard of the SIM swap scam until they became victims. The Greater Toronto Area couple did nothing wrong but they lost about $140,000 anyway.“It’s a nightmare,” Wayne told Global News in a television interview, his wife Diana at his side.“We’re doing this, in part, to get the word out,” Diana said. The Storks are longtime customers of Freedom Mobile. Last September, when the couple were at home, Wayne’s phone suddenly stopped working.“My phone went into SOS mode, it was deactivated,” he said. From that point, Wayne had no use of the phone, but someone else had access to the personal information attached to it.“He (Wayne) was watching his accounts drain of money, that’s when the panic set in,” Diana said.Over the next 24 hours, scammers had gained access to Wayne’s stock trading account and other accounts, including a cryptocurrency one that contained the proceeds from an inheritance.“The Bitcoin was worth $140,000, and we lost that,” Diana said. When the couple called Freedom Mobile’s customer service line, they say a representative said records showed someone had obtained a new SIM card in a retail location in Toronto, apparently claiming to be Stork.Stork says the phone representative asked “weren’t you in the store yesterday to get a new SIM card?” to which Stork said no, it wasn’t him.A SIM swap scam can take different forms.

PM Modi behaving like a tin-pot dictator: Derek O'Brien
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of behaving like a «tin-pot dictator,» and said the BJP-led Centre was arresting opposition leaders in its desperation to secure win in the upcoming elections. «The Prime Minister is behaving like a tin-pot dictator, arresting opponents, election agents, transferring state government officials… Changing rules in desperation to win seats… Why?» said O'Brien, who is in Delhi for a meeting of opposition INDIA bloc leaders with the Chief Election Commissioner, a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate. INDIA bloc parties are rallying behind Kejriwal, with the TMC making its first appearance with the opposition alliance partners since seat-sharing talks with Congress in West Bengal failed, and it announced going solo in the Lok Sabha polls. «The Director General of Police (DGP) West Bengal was changed thrice in 24 hours… Why wasn't the ED director changed?» the TMC Parliamentary Party leader in Rajya Sabha said.
