The F&O debate: Balancing retail protection and market depth
F&O segment has evolved into a critical pillar of India’s capital market infrastructure. But success, as often happens in financial markets, brings new challenges. The debate today is no longer about whether derivatives are necessary. The concern instead revolves around the scale and nature of retail participation, particularly in short-dated options.Data over the last few years has shown a clear pattern: a large proportion of retail traders in options incur net losses.

Mint Quick Edit | Rigidity is risky: Pin the crisis of LPG and oil on inflexible market and military forces
Given the distinction that India makes between essential and discretionary spending, the Centre’s use of the Essential Commodities Act to regulate LPG supply was no surprise. Households being prioritized over commercial users was like a policy reflex; restaurant food is seen as an indulgence. Yet, market psychology doesn’t always comply.

Investors run for cover fearing Nifty could test 52-week low
₹10.9 on 27 February, a day before the war.Investors purchase put options to protect their portfolios from downside risk. It is the opposite of a call option, which is purchased during bull markets.Demand for the 22,000 put is reflected in the rise of its open interest (OI)–a gauge of money flowing into a market–to 5.33 million contracts on Friday from 1.4 million when the war began. The US and Israel strikes and the retaliation by Iran across the Gulf region show no signs of abating.

Adam Smith’s curiosity continues to enlighten us—or at least those who understand his views
I’ve long thought that calling Adam Smith the father of economics seriously understates his significance. In some ways he was indeed the first economist, and The Wealth of Nations, published 250 years ago this week, was indeed the discipline’s seminal text. But his ambitions and insights extended so much further than the dismal science as now conceived.

Ambuja’s shift from volume chase to value accretion may take time to pay off
Shree Cement had earlier adopted a similar value-over-volume approach to bridge pricing gaps with competitors—a strategy that has begun to show results. However, the move came at a time when the industry was consolidating and peers were pursuing volume-led growth through aggressive expansions. As a result, Shree Cement lost market share, and despite some cost advantages, muted cement prices weighed on its realizations.Ambuja believes consolidation in the sector has not yet delivered the expected pricing discipline.Instead, the company plans to rely on cost efficiencies and premiumization to drive margin expansion.Management expects revenue growth to outpace volume growth as the share of premium products rises.

War jitters cool Dalal Street, but India’s pricey tag remains
over the past two weeks amid global risk aversion, rising crude oil prices and persistent foreign portfolio investor outflows, prompting investors to reassess valuations after trade-deal-fuelled exuberance and a sharp rebound from budget-session lows. However, the correction has only partly cooled the market’s froth. A Mint analysis of over 3,400 BSE-listed companies shows that while valuations have moderated from recent highs, a significant portion of stocks still trades at premium multiples.Valuations across the broader market were visibly stretched when the Sensex touched its 52-week high of 85,762.01 on 2 January 2026.

Young savers drift away even as retirees prop up bank deposits
Indian banks are losing ground among working-age savers, even as retirees return in growing numbers to park money in fixed deposits and savings accounts.Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India shows the share of deposits held by working Indians aged 25 to less than 60 has steadily declined over the past two years, highlighting how younger savers are no longer reliant on banks to grow their money. The working population held 55.46% of retail deposits in December 2025, down from 57.41% in March 2023, the earliest comparable data. That is a change of 195 basis points (bps).By contrast, the share of depositors aged 60 and above rose sharply to 40.6%, from 38.25% as of March 2023, up 235 bps.

Mint Explainer: Why Karnataka’s case against Jar could test digital gold regulation
The Karnataka government’s action against Bengaluru-based digital gold savings app Jar has become a test case for India’s wider digital gold industry. Acting on inputs from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and a public caution from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), the state has booked Jar Gold Retail Pvt Ltd and its directors under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) Act.Because similar products are sold across the market, the case could shape how digital gold platforms are scrutinized in India.
