Smart money waiting on the sidelines in Arbitrage funds
Arbitrage funds, a category with assets worth ₹2.35 lakh crore, have received inflows of ₹89,400 crore in the last 12 months as rich investors use these schemes to park money for short-term needs. These funds now account for 53% of the net inflows into the hybrid category, according to data from WhiteOak Capital Mutual Fund. Higher returns than debt funds along with the benefit of equity taxation are driving investors to arbitrage funds. Distributors point out that many savvy investors are using these schemes to park money as they believe valuations are rich and wait for a correction to deploy more money.

Adani Group have approached the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) seeking settlement in a case that alleges violations of public shareholding norms through unfair practices at four listed companies of the infrastructure conglomerate. RBI moves, asset quality to push NBFCs slow down asset growth to 15 pc in FY25, FY26: Crisil
RBI's regulatory initiatives and asset quality trends will push non-bank lenders to slow down their growth in asset under management (AUM) to 15-17 per cent in the current fiscal and next, domestic rating agency Crisil said on Monday. The sector had achieved a handsome growth of 23 per cent in the AUM in FY24, the agency said, adding that even with the slower growth, the AUM expansion will be higher than the 14 per cent of the last decade. Entities will opt for «sustainable growth» because of the regulatory environment and asset quality trends, the rating agency said, adding that the present situation will lead to recalibration in strategies. RBI had in November last year increased the risk weights on banks' lending to NBFCs along with the lending to unsecured loans, where NBFCs are very active. Additionally, the micro loan segment is also showing signs of stress on asset quality lately.

Before exiting, Joe Biden heads to Africa to highlight his own counter to China. Will Donald Trump take it up?
Biden is finally making his long-promised visit to Africa this week, attempting to showcase a US-backed railway project in three countries that he has pushed as a new approach in countering some of China's global influence. Biden's first visit to the continent as president — which he left to the very end — will highlight the Lobito Corridor railway redevelopment in Zambia, Congo and Angola. It aims to advance US presence in a region rich in the critical minerals used in batteries for electric vehicles, electronic devices and clean energy technologies. That's a key field for US-China competition and China has a stranglehold on Africa's critical minerals.

Is it time to start buying the fear and volatility now? Prateek Agrawal answers
Prateek Agrawal, MD & CEO, Motilal Oswal AMC, says if we see more drops this month, it’s likely we’ll witness a bottom formation. There’s some positive news to highlight. The GST collection figures were solid. Although the GDP data for Q2 didn’t meet expectations, it’s clear that mining and electricity were the two sectors that dragged it down. The slower growth in those areas was mainly due to improved monsoon conditions. As we move into Q3, we can expect to see better numbers. There’s definitely a sense of optimism around. It has been quite a yo-yo kind of a market. The excesses in the market are over, is it time now to start buying the fear and volatility? Prateek Agrawal: That has been our thought for some time now. Typically, we have seen that a 5% to 6% kind of a correction is a good correction. And buying comes in. This time around, we saw intense selling in the month of October. November saw a reduction. Now, if this month sees further reduction, chances are good that the bottom formation that we are talking about happens. There is some data to cheer about. The GST collection data was good. While the GDP data for Q2 was lower than expected, very clearly there were two spaces which pulled it down, mining and electricity.
