Oil prices rise on moderate US inflation data, strong demand
Oil prices extended gains from the previous session on Thursday on signs of stronger demand in the U.S. where data showed slower inflation than markets expected, strengthening the argument for an interest rate cut which could result in even stronger demand. Brent futures rose 42 cents, or 0.5%, to $83.17 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) gained 43 cents, or 0.6%, to $79.06 at 0032 GMT.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway reveals new $7 billion stake in Swiss insurer Chubb
annual shareholders meeting earlier this month. Berkshire sold off a little over 116 million Apple shares in the quarter — accounting for about 13% of its stake — to trim its biggest single investment. But it still holds nearly 790 million Apple shares, and Buffett told shareholders that he expected the iPhone maker to remain a long-term holding.

Blockchain researchers use AI to spot Bitcoin money laundering
Back in 2019, blockchain analytics firm Elliptic published research with the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab showing how a machine learning model could be trained to identify Bitcoin transactions made by illicit actors, such as ransomware groups or darknet marketplaces. Now the partners have put out new research applying new techniques to a much larger dataset, containing nearly 200 million transactions.

Congress plans to give country's 15% budget to Muslims: PM Modi
Narendra Modi on Wednesday alleged that Congress was planning to allocate 15% of the country's budget to Muslims, adding while he was accused of doing Hindu-Muslim politics, it was the Opposition party that was guilty of doing it. «Congress is doing the Hindu-Muslim politics… Their ecosystem is claiming that Modi is doing Hindu-Muslim talk but Modi is exposing those (Congress) who are doing Hindu-Muslim to break the country,» he said in an election rally in Kalyan. Earlier, he also addressed a rally in Nashik. «Congress wants to do a budget for Hindus and a budget for Muslims,» he alleged. «Congress was doing this sin that I opposed and if Congress and the Indi Alliance come to power, they will do the same. Do we want to keep the country together or not, is it good to divide Indians like this?» he said.

Poll Call 2024: Modi has brazenly used communal language, says Congress
Congress questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that he has «never done Hindu-Muslim» politics in elections and that the day he would do so he would be unworthy of public life. Spokesman Jairam Ramesh said Modi had «brazenly used communal language» during his campaign speeches and that Congress had complained to the Election Commission about it. «Even by his own pathetic standards, Mr Modi's latest claim that he does not do Hindu-Muslim politics shows the new depths he reaches daily in lying. Since April 19, 2024, it is a matter of public record that cannot be erased from our collective memory — even if Mr Modi erases it from his own — that the outgoing PM has blatantly and brazenly used communal language, symbols and allusions. We have brought this to the attention of the Election Commission of India as well. Action should have been taken, but sadly it has not,» he said.

Two-wheeler makers ride high on record sales of branded spare parts
Two-wheeler makers Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp posted record revenue from sales of branded, genuine parts — like brake pads, headlights and speedometer — accessories and merchandise in FY24. At their post-earnings investor calls, company executives attributed this to the market for such items becoming more organised and buyers giving preference to branded spares over non-branded ones. Additionally, a superior product mix — higher contribution of premium models in the sales mix and an expansion in the product portfolio in the aftermarket segment — also helped companies boost revenue and profitability, they said. At Hero MotoCorp, revenue from spare parts and accessories increased nearly 80% in five years to a record Rs 5,087 crore in FY24 from Rs 2,836 crore in FY19. The share of this sub-segment in the company's revenue rose to 13.6% from 8.7% in this period, show its filings. Encouraged by the growth potential, the maker of the Xpulse and Splendor motorcycles will be expanding its Global Parts Centre.

Lok Sabha polls: Dharavi redevelopment gives Sena (Shinde) upper hand
Mumbai once had the dubious distinction of being Asia's largest slum. Then, an embarrassed Mumbai Municipal Corporation claimed Orangi in the Pakistani port city of Karachi has inherited that rather ignominious moniker. However, Dharavi still is home to a very large number of people — more than half a million — jostling for meagre resources on a relatively tiny patch of land — of about 550 acres. And, the area remains central to the outcome of the parliamentary polls in the Mumbai South Central seat. Dharavi is populated largely with 50 to 70 square foot homes, interspersed with leather and plastic recycling and pottery and other small-scale units. Successive state governments for several decades have been promising to redevelop Dharavi, which is part of the Mumbai south central constituency.

Gaza fighting intensifies, Israel asks why armed men were at UN site
Antagonism between Israel and the United Nations worsened as the Israeli army sought an explanation for footage showing armed men next to U.N. Palestinian relief agency vehicles. Separately, India was working to bring home the body of a U.N. staffer killed in Rafah by what the global body said was tank fire. Israeli forces have in recent days pressed into the east of Rafah in pursuit of what they say are four Hamas battalions despite warnings by Israel's main ally, the United States, to hold off to avoid mass civilian casualties.
