Samsung India nears another milestone in smartphone business
Samsung India is poised to surpass Rs 80,000 crore in total smartphone revenue this financial year, propelled by about 12% sales volume growth widely outperforming a subdued domestic market, said two people aware of the matter. The company accelerated sales spurred by premiumisation with average handset selling prices rising by 22%, higher than the industry average of 17%. The share of no-cost EMI purchases has also increased from 54% to 60% during the year, said Akshay Rao, mobile experience business general manager at Samsung India. Tenure for no-cost EMI schemes too rose to 18 months from 12 months earlier. Rao, however, declined to share or confirm the revenue performance for FY24.

Trillions in investment are needed for such projects, but access to funds and green tech remains a challenge, especially for developing nations.

The era of no-brainer 5% returns on cash is ending
It’s getting more complicated to hold cash. Certificates of deposit, money-market funds and various other cash-like investments have offered healthy returns, in many cases over 5%, since the Federal Reserve started lifting interest rates two years ago. But with the central bank now considering cutting rates, some cash-like investments are staying strong while others have begun to decline in yield.

It’s possible to address the divergence in data on Indian consumption
The government recently released a fact sheet based on the highly awaited Household Consumer Expenditure Survey (HCES). The 2022-23 survey’s results have been widely discussed in the media and highlight that the process of structural change expected with improvements in living standards has continued. One concern noted by many commentators is the divergence between aggregate household expenditure as measured by the HCES as against the national accounts (reported under Private Final Consumption Expenditure or PFCE).

Let’s do all we can to engage young men on inequality
A worrying trend has been identified, revealing that a palpable ideological chasm has emerged between young men and women. Research shows that while young women tend to be more liberal or progressive, young men as a group are becoming more conservative across the globe. Data reporter John Burn-Murdoch’s analysis of several surveys in Financial Times shows that in the US, UK and Germany, young women are at least 25 percentage points more liberal than young men, and a similar divide is seen in Poland, South Korea, China and Tunisia.

The American Dream Accelerates Away From Those in the Slow Lane
Much of America’s two-speed economy is powering ahead, but it’s left a trail of destruction behind it. The laggards are starting to get into serious trouble, with the worst-hit, low-income consumers held back by powerful forces: higher interest rates, inflation and the depletion of pandemic-era support. This is terrible news for those left behind, and bad too for investors in the companies that sell to them.

Indian Navy's capture of pirate ship showcases India's world-class special forces: Western analysts
pirates off Somalia's coast shows how India's military has developed special forces capabilities on par with some of the world's best, according to Western analysts. The Indian Navy seized MV Ruen, a former Maltese-flagged bulk carrier, rescued 17 hostages and captured 35 armed pirates in the nearly 40-hour operation around 2,600 km from the Indian coast last week. «The success of the operation marks the Indian Navy as a top-class force in terms of training, command and control and other capabilities,» CNN quoted John Bradford, Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs fellow, as saying. «What marks this operation as impressive is how risk was minimised by using a coordinated force that includes the use of a warship, drones, fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and marine commandos,» Bradford said.
