Centre rejigs plan for sale of Bharat rice and wheat
NEW DELHI : Dismal sales of ‘Bharat’ rice, a subsidized grain aimed at helping curb its market price, have made the Centre changed its strategy. The government’s new plan is to take subsidized rice as well as atta (wheat flour) to markets where their intake is high in a targeted attempt to increase their consumption and cool prices, two senior officials aware of the matter said. The new plan is in the works after only 7.2% of Bharat rice, compared to a high 84.6% of Bharat atta that were lifted from government warehouses by three agencies managed to sell, the first of the two officials said on condition of anonymity.

Why is the Q3 GDP surprise not surprising?
GDP growth print for 3Q contrasts the grim reality of household consumption and income situation. The latest national expenditure survey (2022-23), released after a lag of 11 years shows real consumption grew modestly at 3% over the past 11 years and the PLFS data indicates flat real incomes over the past four years. Also, most consumer companies have shown a lackluster demand situation. What is not surprising is that the persisting discordance has accentuated in the 3Q print and reflects in a) the large contribution of the discrepancy component, b) a sharp rise in net indirect taxes translating into enlarged expenditure GDP, and c) a disproportionate decline in imports relative to the decline in consumption.

Railways' policies being framed keeping only the rich in mind: Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that policies for Indian Railways were being framed by the government keeping only the rich in mind, and claimed that trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a «guarantee of betrayal». In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi alleged that by showing the dream of making those wearing «hawai chappal» (slippers) travel by «hawai jahaz» (airplane), Prime Minister Modi is even distancing them from «gareebon ki sawari» (vehicle of the poor) railways. «Amidst a 10 per cent increase in fare every year, loot in the name of dynamic fare, rising cancellation charges and expensive platform tickets, people are being lured by showing them a picture of an 'elite train' that the poor cannot even set foot on,» the former Congress chief said. The government has collected Rs 3,700 crore from senior citizens in the last three years by «snatching away» the exemptions given to them, he claimed.

Doors still open for alliance with TMC: Jairam Ramesh
Trinamool Congress has decided to contest all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, the Congress on Sunday said doors are still open for an alliance with the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC for the upcoming general polls. Ahead of the opposition's rally in Patna, Congress general secretary and in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh told PTI they are still hopeful and believe that when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee says she is in the INDIA alliance, her priority is to defeat the BJP. «We take that as a statement of her priority and intent,» he said in Gwalior. «We have not closed any doors. She has unilaterally announced that she will contest all 42 seats (in West Bengal), well that is her announcement. As far as we are concerned, talks are still continuing, the doors are still open and the final word will not be said till the final word is said,» he said.

View: The very cheesy business of passing off doosri cheez as asli cheese by brands
cheese. It's the secret weapon that can transform dull, mass-produced fare into edible delights. No wonder, it is there everywhere — as a filler nestled within burgers, as a flavourful dip accompanying side dishes, as an entity lathered in a dosa... Recently, however, a cheesy kerfuffle erupted in Maharashtra after the state FDA cancelled the licence of a McDonald's outlet in Ahmednagar for using cheap vegetable oil instead of cheese in its products. A news report in this veritable paper stated that the FDA officials found that McCHEESE burgers, CHEESY nuggets, and CHEESY dips were actually — horror of horrors! — 'cheese flavoured'. The regulator alleged that the company used cheese analogues, which replicate the taste and texture of real dairy cheese, without proper disclosure on labels or display boards, misleading consumers into thinking they were eating the real thing.
