Budget 2024 expectations: Income Tax relief, old pension scheme — what the salaried class wants from FM Sitharaman
Union Budget for the fiscal year 2025 in July, several stakeholders have urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to provide tax relief for salaried employees. The Union Budget 2024-25 is expected to be presented in Parliament on July 23 or 24.Salaried employees are hoping to see several favourable announcements, including an increase in income tax rebate, restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS) and formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The last pay commission was formed in 2014 and its recommendations were implemented in January 2016.They also want income tax slabs under the old tax regime to be adjusted or the tax exemption limit increased for the new tax regime. To boost consumption, the government may provide some tax relief to those with income above ₹15 lakh annually and may also explore reducing the income tax rates for annual income of ₹10 lakh, according to a report by news agency Reuters. In a pre-budget meeting on Monday, trade unions made some key demands to the finance minister. The unions had asked the government to stop the privatisation drive of PSUs, scrap the new pension scheme, fill all the existing vacancies in the central government departments and PSUs, and stop the practice of contract and outsourcing.“The ceiling limit for the income tax rebate for the salaried class on their salary and gratuity must be substantially raised.

A similar proposal by the surgeon general that all cigarette packages carry a warning that smoking “may be hazardous to your health" is what kickstarted efforts to tackle this addiction. Will the surgeon general’s warning about social media addiction bear fruit? The biggest problem with social media is that it is anything but social.

Heathrow Airport plunged into chaos Tuesday night due to an IT allocation failure in British Airways' systems, stranding passengers on planes and causing significant delays in luggage collection. The disruption led to hours-long delays for travelers attempting to retrieve their baggage. According to a Daily Mail report, the failure affected numerous flights, leaving passengers stuck on aircraft for extended periods. Many travelers were unable to disembark or collect their luggage, resulting in widespread frustration and anxiety about their onward journeys. Highway tolls shouldn't be charged for pothole-filled or muddy roads, Nitin Gadkari tells highway agencies
Nitin Gadkari stated on Tuesday that highway agencies should not charge tolls if roads are not in good condition, emphasizing that poor road quality and prolonged wait times at toll plazas are unacceptable, a TOI article stated. Speaking at a global workshop on satellite-based tolling, set to be implemented over 5,000 km this financial year, Gadkari underscored the necessity for highway agencies to provide efficient services before collecting toll fees. “If you don’t provide good services, you should not charge toll,” Gadkari asserted. “We are in a hurry to start tolling to collect user fees and protect our interest. When the condition of any road is not good I get numerous complaints and there are social media posts all over...You should collect the user fee where you provide the best quality road. If you collect toll on roads with potholes, mud, then there will be a backlash from people. We (political leaders) face people’s ire.” Gadkari emphasized that field officers of National Highway (NH) agencies must be sensitive to the public's pain caused by delays at toll plazas, advocating for a mechanism to quickly address grievances. The minister's remarks reflect a growing frustration among commuters regarding the state of highways and toll collection practices.

Denmark will be first to impose CO2 tax on farms, government says
Denmark, a major pork and dairy exporter, will introduce a tax on livestock carbon dioxide emissions from 2030, making it the first country to do so and hoping to inspire others to follow, the government said on Tuesday. A tax was first proposed in February by government-commissioned experts to help Denmark reach a legally binding 2030 target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from 1990 levels. The centrist government late on Monday reached a wide-ranging compromise with farmers, industry, labour unions and environmental groups on policy linked to farming, the country's largest source of CO2 emissions.

AI regulation: People should be players, not pawns
Paul Graham of Y Combinator recently shared an anecdote that perfectly encapsulates the challenge of regulating artificial intelligence (AI). When he asked someone helping the British government with it what they would regulate, the response was a refreshingly honest, “I’m not sure yet." As Graham noted, this might be the most intelligent thing anyone has said about AI regulation thus far. AI creates a “pacing problem," first explained in Larry Downes’ book The Laws of Disruption.
