United Spirits, India's biggest liquor firm, said there is a slowdown in liquor demand because tipplers are limiting social occasions although they are still not downgrading to lower-priced products. The Diageo-controlled company expects the pace of growth to recover in the second half of the year due to a lower base, although it will still be slower compared with the demand surge seen after the pandemic. «On the demand front, the growth has moderated from two years ago. And at the lower end, we continue to see some pressure. Moderation was there during the wedding season, and so growth is continuing to be slower,» the company's managing director and chief executive Hina Nagarajan told analysts during an earnings call.

Ajit Pawar is alleged to have made a call to the Pune Police Commissioner to go «soft» on the minor son of Vishal Agarwal after his arrest for running his car over two people, killing them on the spot. Responding to the allegations, Ajit Pawar, who is also the Guardian Minister of Pune, did not deny making the call to the police commissioner but claimed that it was only to ensure that the police did not succumb to pressure as the son of a «rich person» was involved. «If any such incident happens and if you are the guardian minister, then one would call up the police commissioner. So, I told him (Pune Police commissioner) to not succumb to any pressure as a rich person's family was involved. There was a possibility of different kinds of pressure on police,» said Pawar.
