This is what justice feels like: Bilkis Bano on Supreme Court verdict
Bilkis Bano said after the Supreme Court on Monday quashed the remission granted to 11 men convicted of raping her and murdering seven members of her family during the 2002 riots in Gujarat. While quashing the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission, the apex court also said the state government's order was «stereotyped» and passed without application of mind. In a statement issued through her lawyer Shobha Gupta, Bano thanked the top court for the verdict and said «today is truly the New Year for me».

How Red Sea attacks put India’s trade at risk
The Gaza war has long posed the risk of escalating into a broader crisis for the global economy, and recent developments in the Red Sea are proving this concern to be valid. Yemen's Houthi militants have been attacking commercial ships, purportedly in solidarity with Palestine, potentially jeopardizing global supply chains and driving up commodity prices, especially for fuel. It goes without saying that India is vulnerable to these cascading impacts.

"Not seeking wider conflict in Middle East": White House after US sinks Houthi ships in Red Sea
US helicopters sank three Houthi boats in the Red Sea, the White House issued a statement saying that it is not seeking a 'wider conflict' in the Middle East, CNN reported. Notably, the US helicopters sinking the Houthi boats and killing its crew, marked the first instance when the US killed members of the Iranian-backed rebel group which has been targeting commercial and merchant vessels in the Red Sea since tensions broke out. The US has avoided directly striking the group inside Yemen as it seeks to avoid escalating the crisis further. But a National Security Council spokesman said on Sunday that the US would continue acting in 'self-defense'. «We don't seek a conflict wider in the region and we're not looking for a conflict with the Houthis.

Why the EU’s tougher new migration pact is good for Indians
The European Commission recently approved regulations making it tougher for unintended immigrants to settle down in the European Union. Collectively known as the new EU Pact on Migration, the rules are aimed at restricting the number of new immigrants into the EU, even as member states recognize the need for new workers given the number of ageing individuals. The net result, perversely, might well be an increase in the legal flow of skilled immigrants, such as medical or information technology professionals.

Government working to restore peace in Manipur: Governor
Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey on Tuesday said the government is working to restore peace in the state, which has been in the grip of ethnic violence since early May. Uikey, who was speaking at the launch of the Livelihood Development Programme for Internally Displaced Persons, said the crisis can be cordially resolved with the contribution and support of all stakeholders. Ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, following a tribal solidarity rally that turned violent in Churachandpur district, leading to retaliatory violence between Chin-Kuki-Zo and the Meitei communities across the state. The governor said the state government is trying to compensate families that have lost their homes and belongings in the violence. Uikey said the state needs to consider how people from different communities have helped each other during this time of crisis. The governor said Maolkeki Foundation is working to provide children with education material, nutrition supplements and clothing.

Manipur's ethnic unrest triggers highway tensions amidst security measures
Manipur, the state government has opened up the highways from the valley region to the hill region deploying additional security forces on the highway, however the Kuki-Zo civil society groups have opposed the move. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), however, has decided to seal the entire Churachandpur district which would block the state government from posting more forces and opening the routes, citing concerns over possible disruption during the Christmas season.
