Category 1 storm Hilary is expected to make a landfall into Southern California on Sunday as a rare tropical storm, unleashing floods, fierce winds and heavy downpours as residents evacuate, parks and beaches close and first responders brace for water rescues. According to the National Hurricane Center Hilary is developed now a Category 1 storm with maximum winds of 80 miles per hour as it barrels north-northwest at a speed of around 21 mph,. It was about 285 miles south-southeast of San Diego as of 5 a.m.

Rutte on Sunday told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the Netherlands and Denmark will give F-16 warplanes to Ukraine. Rutte, meeting with Zelenskyy at a Dutch air base, said the planes would be delivered once unspecified conditions are met. The announcement came minutes after Rutte and Zelenskyy inspected two gray F-16 jets parked in a hangar at the base.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday vowed stern retaliation for a Russian missile strike in the center of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv that killed seven people and wounded almost 150 others the day before. «I am sure our soldiers will respond to Russia for this terrorist attack. Respond tangibly,» Zelenskyy said in a video address published in the early hours of Sunday at the end of a visit to Sweden, his first foreign trip since attending a NATO summit in Lithuania last month.

9 Indian Army soldiers lost their lives while another one was critically injured after their ALS vehicle skidded off the road and plummeted into a deep gorge in Ladakh's Leh district. The incident took place near Kiari in southern Ladakh's Nyoma. Leh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) P D Nitya told PTI that the Army vehicle, carrying 10 personnel, was on its way from Leh to Nyoma when the driver lost control and plunged into a gorge at around 4.45 pm.

Canada's western province of British Columbia intensified further on Saturday, doubling the number of people under an evacuation order to 35,000 from a day earlier, as authorities warned of difficult days ahead. The province declared a state of emergency on Friday, to access temporary authoritative powers to tackle fire-related risks, as out-of-control fires ripped through interior British Columbia and partially shut down some sections of a key transit route between the Pacific coast and the rest of western Canada, and destroyed many properties. «The current situation is grim,» Premier Daniel Eby told reporters on Saturday, saying some 35,000 people are under an evacuation order, and a further 30,000 were under evacuation alert.

An "abnormal situation" occurred at Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft on Saturday as it was preparing to transfer to its pre-landing orbit, Russia's national space agency Roskosmos said. The Russian spacecraft is scheduled to land on the south pole of the moon on Monday, part of a big power race to explore a part of the moon which scientists think may hold frozen water and precious elements. "During the operation, an abnormal situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters," Roskosmos said in a short statement.

Chernihiv killed seven people and wounded more than 100 on Saturday, in what the UN called a «heinous» attack hours after President Vladimir Putin met Moscow's top army commanders. «It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,» said Denise Brown, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine. She was referring to the Orthodox holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord which saw some in Chernihiv attending church services in the morning. «I condemn this repeated pattern of Russian strikes on populated areas of Ukraine… Attacks directed against civilians or civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,» she added. Chernihiv, 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Kyiv towards Belarus, has been largely spared from major attacks since the first months of Russia's invasion as fierce fighting rages in the east and south.

Storm Betty, the latest weather disturbance to grace the UK, has ushered in heavy rains and strong winds, continuing the capricious nature of August weather in the region. The country experiences its second occurrence of two named storms in August since adopting the naming system in 2015.

As of Saturday morning, Hurricane Hilary was situated approximately 240 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has categorized Hilary as a «large and powerful» storm, characterized by maximum sustained winds clocking in at 130 mph, as per a report in USA Today. Early on Saturday, the National Weather Service in San Diego noted that Hilary had accelerated and deviated slightly eastward in its trajectory. Consequently, the period with the most pronounced impacts from the hurricane is projected to span from Sunday morning until evening. In light of these conditions, the National Weather Service is advising residents to take precautions such as securing valuable items in and around their homes and refraining from driving on roads that are submerged due to flooding.
