Maine. As weather conditions progress, watches and warnings have been implemented across the state. The National Weather Service has activated a tornado watch for Cumberland and York County, indicating the potential for tornado formation in these regions.

Climate change and its effects are no surprise to humankind, these extreme conditions might spell doom for civilisation.  In the latest turn of events, a rapidly developing El Nino threatens Earth's climate activity.  In northern India, relentless monsoon rains have reportedly killed at least 90 people, following burning heat. Major flooding and landslides are common during India's monsoons, but experts say climate change is increasing their frequency and severity. A man died as torrential rains lashed northern Japan on Sunday, a week after seven people were killed in similar weather in the country's southwest.

On the Spanish island of La Parma, meanwhile, at least 4,000 people had to be evacuated as a forest fire burned out of control, authorities said. Spain, Italy and Greece have been experiencing scorching temperatures for several days already, damaging agriculture and leaving tourists scurrying for shade. But a new anticyclone dubbed Charon, who in Greek mythology was the ferryman of the dead, pushed into the region from north Africa on Sunday and could lift temperatures above 45 Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in parts of Italy early this week.

US predicts that the country is set to witness an “extremely hot and dangerous weekend". The prediction indicates that the heat could remain concentrated on the West Coast this weekend, things could get hotter in the South by early next week. The US weather agency noted that Phoenix is likely to record its hottest week on record, based on the 7-day temperature average.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is likely to continue during the next four days, and decrease thereafter. The IMD also said that active monsoon conditions are likely to prevail in central and east India during the next five days. In a statement on Saturday, the IMD said that in the northwest region of the country, there will be widespread rainfall accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. «This weather pattern is expected to continue over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan for the next four days. On July 17, Uttarakhand may experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall,» it said. Moving to the eastern and northeastern parts of India, there will be fairly widespread to widespread rainfall.

Europe and Japan, in the latest example of the threat from global warming. Italy faces weekend predictions of historic highs with the health ministry issuing a red alert for 16 cities including Rome, Bologna and Florence. The meteo centre warned Italians to prepare for «the most intense heatwave of the summer and also one of the most intense of all time».

TOKYO—American and Japanese military officials have been working on a plan for a conflict over Taiwan for more than a year, but the talks have yet to resolve a central question: Would Japan join the fight? Washington has nudged Tokyo to consider roles for the Japanese military such as hunting for Chinese submarines around Taiwan, said people familiar with the discussions, without getting any commitment. The planning is one of the most important aspects of the U.S. response to Beijing’s threats to capture Taiwan by force.
