Naidu will also push for clearance of arrears relating to the Polavaram project — a long-standing demand of the Andhra Pradesh state government. The bone of contention has been cost escalation of the project owing to delays in implementation, increase in land required for the project and then acquired and the number of persons displaced by the project. Though the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government had pushed this, the chief minister had limited success with the Centre. Party sources indicated that Naidu will push the demand again.

India's monsoon has delivered 20 per cent less rain than normal this season, according to the weather department. This shortfall raises concerns for the country's critical agricultural sector, which relies heavily on monsoon rains. News agency Reuters reported that as per the Indian Meteorological Department, India has received 20 per cent less rainfall than normal since June 1. Almost all regions except for a few southern states have seen shortfalls and some northwestern states experiencing heat waves, the report said. «The monsoon's progress is stalled. It has weakened. But when it revives and becomes active, it can erase the rain deficit in a short burst,» an IMD official told Reuters.

Adani Group unit Ambuja Cement is to acquire Hyderabad-based Penna Cement at an enterprise value of ₹10,422 crore, adding to its capacity and market share in southern India. Mumbai-headquartered Ambuja Cement will acquire 100% of Penna Cement from existing promoter group P Pratap Reddy and family, the company said in a stock exchange filing. Penna Cement has around ₹3,000 crore of debt, including fund, non-fund debt and inter-corporate deposits, according to sources. Of the enterprise value, Ambuja Cement will hold back around ₹3,500 crore as milestone payments for completion of 2 million tonne (MT) cement capacity and 3 MT clinker facility at Penna's Rajasthan plant, which is likely in a year.
