Air India group active fleet shrinks while rivals expand summer capacity
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.New Delhi: Air India is cutting domestic and international capacity this summer, flying up to 5% fewer flights on domestic routes and nearly 40% less on international corridors compared with a year ago, as a depleted fleet, surging jet fuel costs, and war-related airspace closures squeeze the Tata Group carrier. The airline and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express together offered roughly 9.24 million domestic seats in April and May, down from 9.71 million a year ago, even as India's largest carrier, IndiGo, expanded domestic capacity 6% to 23.04 million seats and newcomer Akasa Air grew 9% to 1.63 million seats, according to data from aviation analytics firm OAG reviewed by Mint. Seats are a measure of capacity for airlines. The move reflects pressures that analysts say have pushed Air India's network strategy into what one expert calls ‘survival mode’.

Muthoot FinCorp is trying to sell a fintech story without behaving like a fintech
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.Muthoot FinCorp Ltd, one of India's largest gold loan non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), is seeking to raise up to ₹4,000 crore through an initial public offering, even as it attempts to convince investors that it is more than just the business it has spent decades building.Muthoot wants to be read as a diversified, technology-enabled financial services company that can grow through its branch network, app, and a wider product set. That is the tension at the heart of the company’s initial public offering (IPO) pitch. In an interview with Mint, chief executive Shaji Varghese said the company is moving “from a single-product company to a company of a social segment with multiple products".The NBFC, with 3,800 branches, ₹56,185 crore in assets under management (AUM) and over ₹1,640 crore in net profit for FY26, approved the IPO on Saturday, subject to shareholder and regulatory clearances.

Vodafone Idea draws up ₹1 trillion cash strategy amid dues, capex push
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.Telecom operator Vodafone Idea Ltd on Monday laid out an ambitious financial roadmap to generate and secure over ₹1.08 trillion in cash over the next three years, betting on a sharp rise in operating earnings, possible bank debt funding, income tax-related recoveries and promoter support to fund its turnaround. The telecom operator has to pay ₹49,000 crore towards spectrum dues over the next three years, execute a capital expenditure plan of ₹45,000 crore for network expansion and upgrades, and meet interest payments of about ₹5,000-6,000 crore to service bank debt, taking its cumulative outgo to nearly ₹1 trillion.“...we are very confident that with the bank loan for the capex and for the Ebitda addition, we will be able to fulfil all our obligations across the next three years,” Vodafone Idea’s chief financial officer, Tejas Mehta, told analysts during the Q4 earnings call. Ebitda is short for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. As of the end of March, the telecom operator had a cash and bank balance of ₹3,715 crore.

Vodafone Idea gets promoter support but funding challenge persists
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.Telecom operator Vodafone Idea showed early signs of operational improvement in the March quarter, as its subscriber base stabilised and average revenue per user (Arpu) rose.Analysts, however, said the company’s long-term recovery still hinges on securing larger funding to manage spectrum liabilities and improve services. On Saturday, the company’s board approved a ₹4,730 crore fund infusion from promoter Aditya Birla Group entity Suryaja Investments Pte Ltd, through issuance of 4.3 billion equity-convertible warrants at ₹11 per share. The funding is largely seen as a signal to lenders that promoters are backing the company at a time when Vodafone Idea has been struggling to secure much-awaited bank financing, according to analysts.“The warrant issue is a positive signal because it reflects continued promoter commitment and brings fresh capital into Vodafone Idea. But ₹4,730 crore by itself is not large enough to resolve the company’s structural challenges,” said Parag Kar, an independent telecom analyst. The bigger challenge remains spectrum liabilities, future payment obligations, capex needs, and cash-flow generation.

How Amazon went from an AI also-ran to a real contender
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.SEATTLE—Not long ago, Amazon was seen as an also-ran in the great AI race.Microsoft, in particular—with its partnership with OpenAI and cloud business outpacing Amazon’s AWS—seemed to have reclaimed its place as the Puget Sound’s reigning tech giant.Things are looking much different for AWS today. That’s thanks to some savvy deals of its own with OpenAI and Anthropic, plans for $200 billion of infrastructure spending and Amazon’s long-term bet on custom chips. It’s also not involved in the ugly tech trial of the year sucking in the biggest names in AI, from Elon Musk and Sam Altman to Mira Murati and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.“People thought we were behind,” Matt Garman, head of Amazon’s cloud-computing business, AWS, told me in an interview here on the corporate campus.

Reliance Jio tweaks feature phone strategy after regulatory scrutiny of tariff practices
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.NEW DELHI: Telecom operator Reliance Jio has opened its low-cost 4G feature phone recharge plans to rival devices after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) flagged device-specific tariffs as “discriminatory”, according to people aware of the matter and changes seen on the company’s website. The move, analysts said, could widen Jio’s reach among feature phone users but dilute one of its key customer lock-in advantages. The change means users of 4G feature phones with physical keypads from brands such as Nokia, Lava and itel can now access Jio’s low-cost recharge plans that were earlier restricted to its own JioBharat and JioPhone devices. The move follows Trai’s March directive asking Jio to stop certain tariff practices that the regulator said violated transparency norms and disadvantaged consumers. “(D)evice-specific tariffs are treated as discriminatory and disadvantageous to the consumers as the offered tariff plans can be accessed only upon purchase of particular make/technology device,” Trai said.Jio communicated compliance with Trai’s March 24 directions to the regulator a few weeks ago, according to two people aware of the matter.
