Difficult to lower interest rates below 20% without access to cheaper funds: MFI heads
microfinance institutions (MFIs) on Friday said that it would be difficult for them to lower interest rates unless they have access to cheaper sources of funds which can be ensured by a dedicated credit guarantee scheme, refinance facility or interest subvention. The rates charged by microfinance lenders have always been a contentious issue and have again come under regulatory glare following an increase in defaults seen in the sector. Most lenders charge between 21% and 24% a year. The Department of Financial Services at a meeting with MFI heads earlier this week urged them to reduce rates to make the loans viable for borrowers. «Given the cost structure, it would be difficult for NBFC-MFIs to reduce rates below 20%,» said Sadaf Sayeed, chief executive at Muthoot Microfinance.

Gold price: Gold rate to surge due to Donald Trump's Inauguration?
Gold prices scaled a four-week peak on Friday and were set for their best week in seven, driven by safe-haven demand amid uncertainty over what policies U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will pursue, while markets awaited jobs data for clues on the trajectory of U.S. interest rates, as per a report. Spot gold climbed 0.4 per cent to $2,679.65 per ounce, as of 1250 (GMT) after hitting its highest level since December 13 earlier in the session. Prices have risen by more than 1 per cent this week. U.S. gold futures rose 0.6 per cent to $2,707.00, Reuters reported. The most bullish outcome for gold is the narrative of ballooning fiscal deficits and unsustainable debt weighing on the U.S. dollar in the longer term and causing doubts about its role as the world’s reserve currency, said Carsten Menke, analyst at Julius Baer, according to Reuters report.

Fundsmith Equity fund sells long-term holdings in Diageo and Apple in 2024
In the fifteenth annual letter to his clients, Terry Smith, the manager of the £22.7bn Fundsmith Equity strategy, said the fund disposed of its holdings in Diageo, «which we had owned since inception». This came following «problems with [Diageo's] new management, shown by a lack of information about its Latin American business», Smith said, which resulted in poorer performance compared to the sector in this area. Fundsmith's profit decline forces Terry Smith to take second pay cut «Moreover, we suspect the entire drinks sector is in the early stages of being impacted negatively by ...

Angel tax removal helped reverse flipping, startup funding $155 bln in 2024: DPIIT
DPIIT) said Friday. “The report we are getting is that startups are returning to India. Angel tax (removal) is one issue that has helped bring some startups,” Bhatia said. Budget FY25 had abolished the angel tax or Section 56(2) VII B of the Income Tax Act that was introduced in 2012 as an anti-abuse measure aimed at tax avoidance and curbing money laundering through inflated valuations. Under this provision, if a closely held company issues shares at a price exceeding fair market value (FMV), computed in accordance with prescribed methodology, the difference is to be taxed as income from other sources.

US stocks' trend of outperforming rest of the world may end in 2025, market expert Ruchir Sharma sounds alarm
Market Expert Ruchir Sharma says that the stock market's momentum looks likely to sputter in 2025 and that it could falter as investors grow wary of the US's mounting debt problems. The Rockefeller International chairman said he believed the US stock market could soon underperform global peers, breaking a long-running trend of US outperformance, he wrote in an op-ed article for the Financial Times. Over the next year the top stocks in the US could underperform the global market by about 10% — reflecting a much worse performance than in 2024, when the top US stocks outperformed the market by about 20%, Sharma estimated.
