The Canadian dollar vs. Donald Trump: How low can a slumping loonie go as the Trump trade plays out?
The Canadian dollar has been steadily declining over the past couple of months — a drop many economists and currency experts have linked to the rising expectations of a Donald Trump victory in the lead up to the U.S. election. The loonie is down just over four per cent against its U.S. counterpart since late September, and 1.5 per cent since Nov. 5. It slumped nearly a half per cent after Trump announced that, on day one of his presidency, he would impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods entering the United States from Canada and Mexico.

Weak Q2 GDP may prompt RBI to go for a CRR cut: Experts
Economists from the Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, HSBC and Standard Chartered now expect a CRR cut later this week as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would rely on the CRR lever, instead of the policy rates, to support growth through liquidity injection. CRR refers to the cash lenders must set aside as part of prudential norms. These funds, kept with the RBI, don't earn any interest. The pressure on the rupee, lower government cash balance and foreign portfolio (FPI) outflows have combined to cast a shadow on growth, although concerns over inflations haven't yet receded.

Mahayuti meeting cancelled again as Eknath Shinde makes himself unavailable
Maharashtra but there is no end to the suspense on who the next chief minister will be. For the second time in the last four days, a meeting of the Mahayuti leaders had to be cancelled on Monday due to the unavailability of caretaker chief minister Eknath Shinde. He was taking rest at his Thane residence as per doctor's advice. Shinde on Sunday had said that he and the two deputy CMs (BJP's Devendra Fadnavis and NCP chief Ajit Pawar) would take forward the discussions on the CMs post, distribution of portfolios and party-wise berths in the new Cabinet on Monday. The three Mahayuti leaders held their first meeting in Delhi last week in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP chief J P Nadda but failed to reach a consensus on power-sharing agreement. The much-awaited second meeting of the Mahayuti leaders last Friday was put on hold after Shinde suddenly flew to his native village Dare in Satara district citing ill health.

Still, manufacturing is not out of the woods yet. ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair Timothy Fiore noted that «production execution eased in November,» consistent with demand sluggishness and weak backlogs, and that suppliers continue to have capacity, with lead times improving but some product shortages reappearing.
