India & Bharat ‘Rural India’ is an excessively elastic term which encompasses everything from the prosperous villages in Tamil Nadu’s industrial belt to water-starved hamlets of Vidarbha and Marathwada. But the vast heterogeneity notwithstanding, rural India has been reeling under some setback or the other for the past few years, from the demonetization of 2016 to the NBFC (non-banking financial company) liquidity crisis in 2018 and finally the hammer blow of covid-19 in 2020. markets UPS Digital Strategy Mobile Continental country Another Ambani vs Mittal battle? A look into Airtel's African empire
Africa as in India. It is the second-biggest telecom company in the continent after South Africa's MTN. Fourteen years ago, Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal took the brave decision to go to Africa and it has been a perilous journey for his company. Africa, where Mittal had expected to map India's telecom growth story onto the continent, turned out to be little like India with its sparse population as well as political volatility which would discourage any pioneer telecom company. Now that Airtel Africa seems to be out of the woods, and having acquired an elephantine footprint in 14 countries across the continent, a big challenge might be shaping up. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries (RIL), who disrupted India's telecom market with low tariffs and cheap handsets by launching Reliance Jio in 2015 and swept aside Airtel to become the market leader, is acquiring a tiny foothold in the African telecom market as a telecom tech and equipment vendor. This analyst spells-out strategy in previous week’s major movers viz. Cochin Shipyard, Zomato and Global Health (Medanta) and three more stocks. Do you see a connection or see other factors to be supporting the rally? Aamar Deo Singh: Overall, markets appear to have factored in the return of the current dispensation at the centre, and that is reflected in the price moves, cutting across sectors and multi-caps with the benchmark indices gaining almost 2% WoW. Unless there is a major upset, of which the probability is very low, markets would continue to in an uptrend in the long-term.

UPS Waves Manufacturing Strategy economy wellness Interviews View: India’s state sector is thriving. That’s a problem
Modi — then chief minister of business-friendly Gujarat state — rode an electoral wave to the prime ministership in New Delhi, many expected that he would be far more supportive of the private sector than previous Indian leaders. As a candidate, Modi was quoted as saying: “I believe government has no business to do business,” and one of the many slogans of that 2014 campaign was “minimum government, maximum governance.” That seemed as close to laissez-faire Thatcherism as one could reasonably expect in India. Nobody who looked closely at Modi’s tenure in Gujarat, however, believed this easy narrative. His proudest achievement there was turning around the state government’s own public-sector companies, particularly in the energy sector. And that’s been his focus in national office as well. In one recent interview, when asked to cite an example of how the markets should react to his expected re-election, he pointed specifically and solely to how he had revived the stock prices of public-sector companies. Modi wasn’t wrong. State firms have done better than India’s benchmark Sensex index for three years straight, and look likely to do so again this year. They have regularly traded at a premium to their private peers.
