China says 239 people died from COVID-19 in June in a significant uptick
China reported Thursday that 239 people died from COVID-19 in June in a significant uptick months after it lifted most containment measures. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention had reported 164 deaths in May and none at all in April and March. China started employing a "zero-COVID" containment strategy in early 2020 and credits the strict lockdowns, quarantines, border closures and compulsory mass testing with significantly saving lives. But the measures were lifted suddenly in December with little preparation, leading to a final surge in which about 60,000 people died, according to the official toll. Deaths this year peaked in January and February, hitting a high of 4,273 on Jan, 4, but then declined gradually to zero on Feb. 23, according to the Chinese CDC. Chinese health officials didn't say whether they expect the trend to continue or if they would recommend for preventative measures to be restored. Two of the deaths in June were from respiratory failure caused by infection, while the CDC said the others involved underlying conditions. Those can include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.

The Ukraine war changed this company forever
This 50-acre plot in Oradea, Romania, close to the border with Hungary, beat out scores of other sites in Europe to become the home of Nokian Tyres’ new 650 million-euro ($706 million) factory. Like an industrial-minded Goldilocks, the Finnish tire company had searched for the just-right combination of real estate, transport links, labor supply and pro-business environment. Yet the make-or-break feature that every host country had to have would not have even appeared on the radar a few years ago: membership in both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Apple is sharpening retail focus in India to shore up revenue
Apple in India is increasing its focus on retail stores to shore up revenue this year. It has raised the sales target of the franchisee-owned exclusive retail stores in India by up to 100% and started offering discounts at its two company-owned brick-andmortar and the online store in India, three industry executives said. These strategies indicate the iPhone company is seeking doubledigit revenue growth in India, they said. Apple has rolled out a ‘student’ offer in its company-owned stores which includes a discount and freebies on Mac computer and iPad tablets whereby the total deal value is steeper than what is available in the franchise-based Apple Premium Reseller stores, the executives said. The company that had increased the sales target for its Premium Reseller stores in the last has done so in the current quarter as well. For some, it is almost doubled on a year-on-year basis. There are 200-plus such stores in the country. An email sent to Apple India remained unanswered till Wednesday press time.
