Venice made $1 mn from the implementation of €5 Tourist Tax in April
Venice implemented a €5 ticketing system for day visitors last month. The city has already said that nearly one million euros have been collected in the first 11 days of the tax application, SchengenNews reports. Local media sources told Schengen visa news that from April 25 to May 5, approximately 1,95,000 tickets were sold, slightly surpassing projections and generating €975,000 in revenue. However, this amount falls short of covering the expenses associated with establishing the online reservation system, conducting information campaigns, and managing ticket controls, which amounted to three million euros.

North East Delhi Lok Sabha Polls: Local issues in spotlight as BJP's Manoj Tiwari takes on INDIA bloc's Kanhaiya Kumar
Delhi riots. He vividly remembers how his shop in the main market was burnt and his family of 10 lived in a camp for over four months before they could gather the courage to return. «The shop took longer to rebuild but the business has not been the same,» he says. North East Delhi constituency, which has the maximum concentration of Muslim voters in Delhi at 20.7%, is divided along communal lines. The epicentre of the Delhi riots of 2020 which claimed 53 lives and left 583 injured, North East Delhi is witnessing a tight contest between two-term BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and Congress' Kanhaiya Kumar, a former CPI leader involved in students politics. Tiwari is the only BJP MP who has not been dropped by the party in Delhi. But anti-incumbency is visible on the ground.

2024 Karnal Lok Sabha Elections: BJP veteran faces Congress youth leader
Karnal | Panipat: A former CM and the currentCM are in the fray in Karnal — one contesting for the Lok Sabha elections and the other for the state assembly bypoll. Manohar Lal Khattar, who was replaced as Haryana CM, is contesting the Lok Sabha election after resigning from Karnal assembly seat. His successor Nayab Saini is contesting the by-poll from the same assembly seat. But more than the CM and the former CM, it is the two other candidates — Congress' Divyanshu Budhiraja and NCP-INLD joint candidate Virender Maratha — who have created a lot of buzz in this constituency, where the BJP registered the second highest margin in the previous Lok Sabha polls. Karnal is seen as one of the better seats for the BJP which its precursor, Jan Sangh, had won for the first time in 1962. While Karnal is hub for rice millers, dairy players and the footwear industry, Panipat in a handloom industry centre.

Bihari versus Bihari: A big Bihar battle is brewing in Delhi
Delhi is witnessing a battle between two prominent Biharis. The contest in the Northeast Delhi constituency is the most watched in Delhi for its two main contenders. The Congress has fielded former president of JNU Students' Union, Kanhaiya Kumar, who became known for the controversy over raising of anti-national slogans on the JNU campus in 2016. He is challenging a formidable incumbent, BJP's Manoj Tiwari, a famous Bhojpuri singer and actor who is known for his hugely popular song 'Rinkiya ke papa'. Tiwari won from the Northeast Delhi constituency in 2014 as well as 2019. His vote share in 2014 was 45% which grew in 2019 to 54%. Kumar and Tiwari are locking horns in a constituency with a sizable population from Poorvanchal. No laughing matter for 'Rinkiya ke papa'? Tiwari's political weight can be gauged from the fact that he is the only sitting MP who has been retained in Delhi. The BJP has replaced candidates in all other six constituencies in Delhi. His vote share grew in 2019 when he defeated former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit with a margin of more than 3.5 lakh votes.

Rishi Sunak’s visa politics has implications for Indian students
Does the political survival of Britain’s first Indian-origin prime minister call for the sacrifice of the dreams of thousands of Indian students aspiring to study in the UK and find a job there to pay off the loans they have taken to finance their education? We hope Rishi Sunak will rise above the primitive instinct to make sacrifices and instead turn fortune's grimace into a smile. Right now, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party is on a losing wicket in British politics. It has lost all recent by-elections and city council elections.

Graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz walked off their jobs and went on strike Monday, the first campus to do so as part of a systemwide protest against a public university they say has violated the speech rights of pro-Palestinian advocates. United Auto Workers Local 4811 represents 48,000 graduate students who work as teaching assistants, tutors, researchers and other academic employees on the 10-campus UC system. Organizers said the campuses will not strike all at once, opting instead for rolling strikes, to protest the arrests and forcible ejection by police of union members who participated in demonstrations calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

Indian students in Canadian province take to the streets over tightening immigration rules
Prince Edward Island (PEI), a significant protest is unfolding. A group of former and current international students, mostly from India, have taken to the streets, voicing their distress over a policy shift that jeopardizes their future prospects in the country. According to reports, the controversy centers on the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), a lifeline for many international students aiming to secure permanent residency (PR) in Canada. Typically, Indian students enroll in institutions in provinces like Ontario or British Columbia. However, upon realizing the fierce competition for PR in these densely populated areas, many transfer to smaller, less populated provinces like PEI. Do you meet the immigration criteria? Check here These provinces, grappling with stagnant and aging populations, have historically relied on the PNP to attract temporary residents, thereby addressing labor shortages and sustaining population growth.
