Buy now, pay how? Inside the worrying surge in India’s household debt
₹51 crore from the previous quarter, while write-offs themselves rose by ₹105 crore over the same period. Abhijit Chakravorty, chief executive of SBI Cards, told analysts in a conference call: “The primary reasons for the increase in credit cost…is that customers obtained multiple trade lines from other lenders after taking a card, and this over-leveraging has impacted their repayment capacity." The credit card business is a tough one and can be highly cyclical. Importantly, the business in general is the canary in a coal mine for economic conditions.

“Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions” by Holger Rathgeber and John Kotter paints a simple visual story of a group of penguins who are unaware that the iceberg they live on is melting. The story follows the journey of one penguin, Fred, who makes the discovery and then the intricate journey Fred has to undertake to convince his community of penguins that their iceberg is melting and that they need to move their habitat. Central to the story are the motivations of each character in the penguin colony and how Fred and his growing clan of believers help them see the real picture.

Chakri Lokapriya on two auto stocks to bet on for near term
«Defence as a segment, whether you take any other country companies, Lockheed Martin in the US, etc, their order book despite being mature countries grow very fast. So, there is a trading positional investment opportunity in, let us say, Bharat Electronics or HAL, but valuations are still rich,» says Chakri Lokapriya, Managing Partner, RSB LLP. What the outlook is on some of these defence stocks, given the fact that they are a buzz in today's trade, what is it that catches your eye within the sector? Chakri Lokapriya: The defence stocks, as we know, have corrected in the last month or so. The outlook remains strong, as the order book for these companies is never in question for the next three to five years. What was in question is the valuation and the ability to sustain the momentum of the order book, which I think the second question is easier to answer, which is the order book momentum will continue. Defence as a segment, whether you take any other country companies, Lockheed Martin in the US, etc, their order book despite being mature countries grow very fast. So, there is a trading positional investment opportunity in, let us say, Bharat Electronics or HAL, but valuations are still rich.

View: Latest GDP numbers do a better job of deciphering the past than of predicting the future
data analytics, predictive tech and AI, data points are valuable not so much for what they tell us about the past but for how well they can predict the future. By that yardstick, Q1 GDP numbers released by NSO last Friday for the quarter ended June 2024 are likely to fail the test. In a world dogged by uncertainty, where black swan events are seemingly no longer the exception, macroeconomic numbers like GDP are incredibly hard to predict. The past is no guide to the future. No one foresaw the pandemic or, further back in time, the Global Financial Crisis, both of which saw GDP growth collapse dramatically. Sure, these were catastrophic events. But, thanks to geopolitics, there are just too many unknown unknowns in the world today to expect GDP estimates for a single quarter to give us more than a very rough idea of how growth is likely to pan out in future.

Charting the global economy: Inflation eases in US and Europe
Europe, setting the stage for policymakers in both regions to lower interest rates in September. On a three-month annualized basis, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying US inflation advanced 1.7% in July, the slowest this year. In Europe, consumer prices rose 2.2% in August from a year ago — the tamest since mid-2021 and significantly lower than the 2.6% pace a month earlier. Meantime, inflation in Tokyo — a leading indicator of the national data due in September — picked up speed in August, supporting the case for the Bank of Japan to continue raising rates at a gradual pace as the bank balances the need to support the economy.

Praan Hive air purifier review: Clean air meets luxurious design
₹54,999), and while it’s all about achieving near-pristine air quality levels, it’s also the most refreshing take on air purifier design I’ve seen in a long while. Call it a homage or inspired design, the Hive takes several cues from the ‘Aluminum era’ industrial design of Apple products, most notably the ‘cheese grater’ Mac Pro – the use of aircraft grade aluminum in a familiar space gray color, for instance. It’s a gorgeous piece of kit, looking quite at home in my living room, although it may be too industrial for classic/vintage home décor.

Sugar stocks surge on Ethanol push, analysts see more upside
sugar stocks listed on the BSE, 35 closed higher on Friday. Shares of Triveni Engineering jumped 8.6%. EID Parry, Balrampur Chini, Shree Renuka Sugars, Dalmia Bharat Sugar, DCM Shriram, Avadh Sugar & Energy and Dhampur Sugar Mills gained between 1.9% and 7.5% on Friday. The government's notification removes the limit that exists on the diversion of sugar for ethanol production. «Since ethanol is a high-yielding product, this removal of cap would help the sugar mills and distilleries to manufacture more ethanol and improve their revenue mix directly, which will improve cash flows and stabilize the sugar industry,» said T Manish, research analyst, Samco Securities.
